This content is protected So THAT'S what "the Doughnut Destroyer" had under all those layers of flab. I'd always wondered if he actually just had goo between his blubber and bones. Anyway, if there was ever a way to bow out well for Williams, this is it. Of course, you can bet for that reason (as ever in boxing) that this won't be his last fight. :-(
I think Danny Williams is a great fighter. One of my favourites. He really coulda been something if he'd have not let his weight get to him. As he was up and coming he weighed aroun 225lbs or so, he was a superb physical specimen, with great speed and stamina. It was said tha in his day he could run 100m in under 11 seconds. He was never a world-beater in terms of talent, but who the hell is in the heavyweight division these days? I also reckon he wasn't physcologically cut out for being a boxer. He's far too much of a nice guy. He had mental issues that let him down as much as anything. Didn't he have a panic attack before the Sinan Samil Sam fight? I heard so. Tragic shame because I cant work out wether he was an over-achiever or an under-achiever. On the one hand he achieved more than a man with his talent ought to have done. He beat Mike Tyson, fought Vitali Klitschko, he won the british ttle 4 times, he KO'd Kali Meehan in one round, and lest we forget he was the man who exposed Audley Harrison. Y'see Danny Williams did not have the same amount of raw god given talent as Audley, but he had so much heart, and Audley had so little, I was glad he won that fight. Then again, I look at the heavyweights these days and think to myself, that on his day, when he had his **** together and was in shape, he could give a lot of the guys in the top 10 a hard fight. Had his mental issues and weight problem not stopped him, then he had enough to beat some of these bums that are out there. He was so horribly inconsistent, when he was at his worst he was dreadful, but when he was at his best he was pretty damn good to be honest. Besides from that there's one thing I've always got eternal respect for Danny Williams for, and thats the man's courage. I honestly reckon he has the most heart of just about any boxer I've ever seen. He is so ****ing brave that he deserves a medal or something. Danny Williams has taken some absolutely terrifying beatings in the past but somehow managed to keep going and stick it out. How many times did he go down against Sinan Samil Sam and keep getting back up, trying to get back into the fight? How many people have stood toe-to-toe with Tyson and out-brawled him? **** I know Tyson was shot and everything, but even at that stage in his career Tyson was extremely dangerous for the first 2 or 3 rounds of a fight. He still carried massive punching power. Williams not only took that, but he came back to win by big KO. Look at the way he fought against Vitali Klitschko, totally outclassed from the start, but kept trying all the way through. The guy even won he British title with his arm dislocated, hanging limp at the side of his body, and KO'd the title holder with one ****in arm. The man had incredible guts and was in so many wars, he deserves our TOTAL respect, because there wont be a heavyweight his with heart for years to come.
Excellent post and all true. Everything I was going to say has been mentioned. The wind has been taken out of my sail but it's ok cuz it was said perfectly.
The picture didn't come through. If you don't mind try to post it again, or send a link to the picture or something...I would like to see it.
He looks like a beast in that photo! I think he will leave it at that, or if he doesn't, that his heart won't be in it if he fights again.
