I watched that fight live on ABC. The paper title was awarded retroactively because Spinks beat Ali and then Spinks signed a rematch to fight Ali instead of fighting Norton. The WBC then recognized the bout as for the hwt championship which it was not since Ali was the champion at that time. Bottom line is...you can't call anyone else champion while someone else is champion. Neither norton or young did anything to be champion or could they since Ali was champion at the time of the fight. Both lost to Ali via decision and that's that.

Who did Burns win it from or Schmeling or Patterson or Frazier ? Who did Sullivan ... and if Sullivan was not a champ who did any of them win it from ..

Enough with the stupid nonsense. The question was which five champs ... now you guys are the governing bodies ?

Honestly your posts are terrible .. putting aside the fact that both Young and Norton were robbed in losses to Ali, Ali refused to give either a rematch ... the governing bodies stripped Ali and Norton/Young was an eliminator ... at the time Ali was losing to seven fight amateur Leon Spinks either Norton or Young would have defeated him if Ali had the decency of fighting either again ... wouldn't expect you to own up to this since you have a history of not holding champions accountable to fighting top contenders ..

Here you go long winded one ... count and split pubic hairs w Boxrec.

You really don't have a clue. It does not matter if a contender loses a close fight to the champion. What matters is ....he lost! Secondly paper titles are meaningless. Ali was champion and the only way to lose that championship is by retiring or losing . If Ali was the champion in1977 which he was then no one else can be champion. That's boxing history 101 for those uninformed which you are. Norton was never hwt champion of the world since someone else was champion at that time and Norton never beat the champion when he got his shot at the title....lost to Ali in 76 and to Foreman in 73. End of story. I should start charging you for the education I am providing you.

Good thing it's up to you to decide who was recognized or not ... truly , you are some character ... your arguments are so flawed, biased and inconsistent that they can be sketches on Comedy Central ... I simply don't have the time or interest to surgically dissect each one as you're a last word freak top boot ... :nut

Taking into account lineals only, to avoid complexity, and in chronological order:

    Johnson
    Louis
    Marciano
    Holmes
Frazier (yes he was born at the wrong time)

    Bonus ball Bowe

I was going to put Frazier but for purposes of interest ,and variety I chose Marciano instead.

Holmes and Lewis would be tough tactical matches.

Marciano and Frazier bring the right kind of pressure that would be a test for Ali.

If you count Norton, then obviously he proved a tough style that Ali never solved. If you don't, then I'm not entirely sure. Possibly Johnson, maybe Holyfield, although I'd make him the favorite against both of them.

I'm surprised at some of the picks on this thread, Since I'm fairly sure Ali would wipe the floor with guys like Dempsey, Tunney, and Bowe.

He probably wouldn't wipe the floor with them but I also have no doubt that he beats Louis and Tyson as well.

If we got into 30 names, then Marvin Hart might be in the debate!
