Obviously nobody is going to get close to Fedor, ever, no matter what.

But Big Nog is seemingly the consensus #2 ATG heavy.

Are there any guys around at the moment who stand a chance to take his position?

And what do they have to do to join the conversation?

    Discuss.

    Junior

If he beats Overeem then hes already got a pretty stacked resume

Now that Barnett Bigfoot Cormier and the likes are in the UFC if he can beat them all then he's right up there, proudly sitting in second place ;)

JDS is in the perfect position. Considering the names he's already got on his record and the sudden influx of talent available to him, if he can put together a good run and stay on top for the next few years he'll have faced and beaten pretty much every top HW in the world today.

Cain can build himself back up fairly easily, and a few decisive wins (including a rematch over JDS) and there's no reason he couldn't be the dominant champion everyone expected to be.

Cormier is as yet undefeated and is already considered one of the top current HWs, but to be honest I think he's just too old to put together the extended run of an ATG, he'd have to still be on top at 40, something not many guys can do.

Josh Barnett is already, imo, a top 5 HW ATG, if he wrecks Cormier and comes back to the UFC and puts together a run (much like Hendo has done recently) it'd be hard to argue against him being in the top 3. I think I covered it in another thread recently, but the guy has only ever lost to other HW greats, never been legitimately submitted, only been kodded once, which was avenged, and went 1-1 against the consensus no. 2 heavyweight in Big Nog. The only thing that would hurt him would be the 3 (2 and a half?) losses to CroCop.

You need to calm down and actually study Big Nog's resume before making rash claims about how he could be overtaken. I can understand anyone saying that someone like Junior dos Santos could soon overtake Mirko Crocop as the 3rd greatest hw ever, but IMO Big Nog has the deepest, strongest, best resume in all of MMA history, not just heavyweight, so I really would think twice before implying that he could be supplanted anytime soon.

I don't think anyone said it was on the verge of happening, but there's no reason to think someone like JDS couldn't overtake Nog in the all time standings. He's only 26, he's looked phenomenal, he is now the champion and has access to most of the best heavyweights on the planet, finally all in one organisation. He's potentially got 10 good years left of competition, which is plenty of time to dismantle the next generation of heavyweights as well.

And I wouldn't be ignoring Barnett either. Dude hasn't looked close to slipping yet (unlike Nog) and he's got a few good years yet to tear up the few guys he hasn't fought at HW.

I just don't see it happening for a good few years at least, so I wouldn't bother making threads on it yet. Many things would need to happen before Nog could get supplanted. I understand people getting excited about Jon Jones soon becoming the #1 lhw ever, because he's within touching distance as things stand of the likes of Wandy, Rua and Chuck as it is (though still behind them all for now). IMO, the closest is the brilliant JDS, but he's still way off, and it's too early to start saying he could do in in the future because it would take a good few top wins over the best comp (eg Overeem, Barnett, rematch with Cain, maybe Cormier and Mir), and we have no guarantees of him winning these fights. Who knows how Cigano would fare against someone as good on the ground as Barnett?

All I'm saying is, keep this in mind when posting on this thread:

    Crocop (IMO #3 hw ever)
    Barnett (IMO #4 hw ever)
    Kharitonov
    Sapp
    Werdum
    Coleman
    Sylvia
    Herring x2
    Ricco Rodriguez
    Goodridge
    Hendo
    Horn
    Inoue
    Schilt
    Couture
    Schaub

Not a resume that can be overlooked after a few good wins by any current fighter. :deal

I think JDS could be in the running.

Nog had a run of about 6 years winning with 2 losses to Fedor. After the run he won some and lost some.

JDS has been going strong for 3 years without a loss. Like Nog, he has beaten some excellent opponents. If JDS continues his reign and beats the likes Overeem, Cormier, and Frank Mir in the next 2 years, then he takes the number 2 spot, and can be argued as the GOAT. If he loses 1 time in the next 2 years fighting top opposition, he still takes the number 2 spot. If he loses 2 times, then I would say it's debatable. What JDS does in the tailside of his career also adds or subtracts a bit to his legacy.

Whomever can win the belt and defend it against everyone in the division and coming to the division in the near future. Could be JDS. Could be Overeem. Could be Velazquez. If the title keeps jumping around then no one has a chance.

If JDS can defend the title for a couple of years like anderson silva or gsp has been doing at 185 and 170 then jds could easily become # 2.

If Junior beats Overeem then we've got a serious debate on our hands.

  11. Josh Barnett would be number 2.

JDS is far from being in the top 5 ATG or even in the top 10. JDS's defeat of Cain V and Carwin arent counted since these two arent anywhere near the top 10 themselves, while CroCop was already past his prime. His one good fight might be against Werdum but in saying this he didnt beat Werdum via submission so this would lessen his win.

So Zombies, cool off on the JDS hype, the guy is still green to be regarded as an ATG. And this is coming from a JDS fan who picked him to win against Cain (unlike all the zombies who fell for the Cain hype).
