The WBC and WBA have cheapened themselves. They are miles behind the IBF and WBO now. Ring Magazine belt is the only legit title.
I wonder if Dana White could be sued. He is essentially doing the same thing Microsoft was doing, i.e. buying out the competitors and then driving them into the ground.
I doubt it. Im not sure if the rules of business apply to sports. The Microsoft situation is very different. Although MS have engaged in protectionism there are no real comparisons here other than a very loose similarity. What the UFC have is a complete stranglehold on a sport with ZERO competition. There's no way to make a case for any other promotion as they simply do not have the brand or economic clout to make any headway and would absolutely be stifled purposefully by the UFC. This is very bad for fighters who NEED to make a living outside of the UFC if they do not dance to Dana's tune. He basically throws them under a bus as he has done recently with Nate Marquardt.
It's what boxers are fighting for. If I am a boxer, i would like to get to have one pf those belts. that belt is a recognition of trophy that you are on the top of the competition.
The reason its only 1 defense is because of time. Every year, January - May, every country holds a National Championship Tourney. 1 Champion is crowned in each weight class in each country. Aug-Sept. a Regional Tourney takes place. Open only National Champtions in their respective regions, Regional Champions will be crowned in N. America, Europe, UK, Latino, Asia-Pacf, African. Oct-Nov Regional Champions meet in the Intercontinental Tourney where a single Intercon Challenger is crowned. Dec: Intercon Challenger faces the reigning Intercontinental Champion. The winner of that bout faces the World Champion. The loser of the bout moves back down to Regional status. January: World Champion faces the Intercontinental Champion. Winner is World Champion for the next year. Loser becomes the Intercontinental Champion for the next year, and will face the winner of the Intercon Tourney Winner next year. Throughout the year the World Champion & Intercontinental Champion cannot have title defenses except for the annual bouts in Dec/Jan. However, they can fight an exhibition match, with any opponent, in the summer if they wish. The benifits of this are simple: 1. Lineal Champions 2. No bullshitting your way into a title shot. You have to work your way up the ladder for a title shot. No exceptions. 3. Produces great fights & meaningful championship bouts. 4. Is a great way to put national pride back in the sport. 5. Great exposure for Boxing.
What about fighters just recently moved up? Do they deserve immediate title shots over the fighters that were ranked in a particular weightclass?
Case in point......Erik Morales vs Jorge Barrios on the Mayweather-Ortiz undercard looks like it will be contested for the WBC vacant title....... This is what I mean that the belts nowdays are worthless. Barrios is best known for losing to every top tier fighter he ever faced. His last meaningful fight was almost 3 years ago at 130 lbs where he was KTFO against another fighter who's lost every meaningful fight he's ever been in (Rocky Juarez) Barrios will fight at 140 lbs for the first time in his life, and it will be for the title?atsch Barrios has done nothing to deserve a title shot in any division, much less one he's never fought in. The WBC is practically gift wrapping the title and handing it to Erik Morales. Whats appalling to me is that depending on what happens in Marquez vs Pacquiao, Morales could be fighting to become the first Mexican to win titles in four different weight classes. The fight holds a historical signicance which is cheapened by the fact that Morales will fight an opponent thats not ranked to be handed a title shot at 140 lbs. It would be nice to see either Marquez or Morales win a title at a fourth weight class, but to have it cheapened like that just does'nt give Morales reason to hold his head high to say, "I'm a four division champ." ......sadly, this is what boxing has become.
