thought there would be more mentions of Dempsey. the so-called Golden era. Dempsey-Tunney drew a gate of 120,757

    Ali.

Louis had the most buzz surrounding a single fight, though.

Some great calls in your list slacker - I can remember the uproar there was after mancini/kim it was a talking point on all the major news stations in Britian as well as the US - the abolitionists really jumped on that one, tragic , terrible fight not long after the tragedy of Lupe Pintor/Jonny owens

Historical context it would be hard to top the Louis/Schmeling rematch - there was more than national pride at stake - it was Hitlers Aryan superman ideology against the best athlete of the free world , good versus evil etc - poor max , he never was a nazi - even had a jewish manager and was always under tremendous pressure to be Hitlers poster boy.

I'd say jack Johnson was the most controversial and influential - he paved the way for the Louis' and Robinsons of the future and set the example for them of how NOT to behave in public.

There were riots and lynchings after he KO'd Jim Jeffries in 1910 thats how polarising a figure Johnson was.
