I have to say donaire and hopkins have impressed me lately. It's rare I am in awe of a boxer but these two looked amazing last time out.
I was going to post something similar & you're def not the odd one out I think Boxing allows you to make that mental connection with a certain fighter your own by way of personality/style or ability regardless of nationality or race. It's not a team game, it's personal one on one in the ring & out & you connect with something you see or can identify with or hope to aspire too. Your very own one on one, when i was in my teens i saw Roberto Duran for the 1st time on a sat lunchtime against Esteban De Jesus & that was IT!!! HOOKED-LINE & SINKER!! & when i found out more about him as a person i thought Thats the sort of person i respect & looked up too & wanted to be in all manner of ways & i never gave a shite about what he did to Buchanan & my mum & uncles are all scottish. In this day & age i've always been a huge fan of pacman ever since i saw him beat MAB the first time & when he fought Ricky i went too Vegas & supported Manny. I felt for all the Hatton fans obviously being fellow countryman & my Son is a huge Ricky fan & he asked me why was'nt i supporting Hatton seeing he's English & my reply was i'am not a hypercrite & i don't like my freedom of thought or choice taken away or dictated too me by mob rule. I've never been a fan of Hatton period. It's just like the Champions league, i don't go overboard for any English club if i don't like them unless there playing a German side:hey I told my son never follow like a sheep just do your individual thing, it's called freedom & boxings an individual sport & in our youth all of us here in our own minds have aspired/dreamed & mimicked our hero's in one form or another. Boxings unique like that, one on one mental role modeling IMO & to jump ship from supporting yer favorite fighter who happens to be foriegn & supporting a feller countryman who you have no connection with except nationality is to me a hi-jacking of yer mental liberty:bbb
That's assuming that one has initially designated a fighter as their favourite. I don't have any favourites. I almost always root for the underdog unless the underdog is not english and the favourite is.
Yeh of course:yep I'll always get behind our fighters if i've got time for them, very rarely have i ever taken a dislike to one of our home grown fighters that i'd want to see them spattered, that just ai'nt in me. But much like the Mayweather/Hatton fight for example, it would have been nice for Hatton to have beaten Floyd not from a nationalistic sense but from a boxing stance even though i don't really like the whole Hatton scene. He was the underdog & even when i was in Vegas for the fight it did'nt bother me in the least that he lost. Yeh it would have been nice if he had won & especially for all his fans who got £££ bled going there. But if you are a boxing fan you just can't but respect & admire the ability of Mayweather love him or loathe him & it's great being able to witness 1st class operators in action. I suppose i'am a boxing supporter 1st & fighter fan 2nd with a few exceptions. I respect them all win or lose.
I'm a supporter of english boxing first and foremost. I want to see as many english champs as possible. After that I just love a good underdog story. Can't help but root for the underdog.
