He moved through as many divisions and beat better fighters along the way. Belts are belts, and nothing more. They're interchangable for me.

Awesome highlight. Haven't gotten to the footage yet, but I'm amped. :good

    Henry Armstrong

Armstrong was a full four division weight champion, there was only eight divisions back then. There were no alphabet belts and a bunch of bull**** weight divisions back then, he would have been a 5 time weight division champion but the ref was paid off. He basically conquered 50% arguably 62% of boxing.

It's not just the belts, Armstrong holding several divisions at the same time when never weighing more than a FW is ridiculous. To boot, he was robbed of his middleweight title as well. Is that not a spectacular feat in and of itself? And Armstrong's competition is great tbqh, Ross, Sarron, Ambers, Zurita, Arizmendi, Garcia, Bass, Larkin, Angott... Ezz has some great straps, and I certainly think he would have whupped both Zale and Conn, but he simply didn't have the opportunity.

    Belts did matter back then.

Yes they did. I made that comment because Ezzard not winning the belts at 160 and 175 doesn't matter at all, given that he went 2-0 against arguably the best middleweight of the time (Burley), 3-0 against the best Lightheavyweight of the time (Moore), and 3-0 against the top two Heavyweights of the time (Walcott and the returning Louis) before hitting his decline and catching that shot from Walcott in the 3rd bout. Charles didn't exactly need Zale or Conn given what his resume is, its better than Armstrong's, which says a lot.

I don't think there's much between them. The difference being that Armstrong generally was outweighed when he was defending the Welterweight title, and Charles faced better opponents, even if Armstrong's own competition was amazing (I think only Greb and Langford have better resumes than Ezz).

    Robinson hands down.

What a bad list to choose from... The only ones you had listed that ought to be there are Robinson, Leonard, Duran, Ali, and Armstrong. Anyone who thought about voting for any of the other five should be shot.

Yeah, and where the **** is Willie Pep?!?

i have seen them al and you r really splitting hairs here but when i compare fighters i look at their prime not their over all body of work cause fighters decline differently. i pickd jones simply when he was at his best i really think he was unbeatable. and he is not even close to being my favorite fighter so its not a fan thing just gotta give the mman his props. i dare anyone to say anybody from 160 to 175 beats him in his prime, hagler maybe has a shot if he could walk him down late but i think his chances woulve been slim

    Here's my take:
I respect the old schoolers. I respect there accomplishments. I respect that the fact they did it in a seriously different social climate. I respect there toughness which modern day fighters do not posses. I also respect the bar which they set rather high. BUT.
The modern day athlete is in a different stratesphere. The old schoolers fought guys who had day jobs. Butchers and cab drivers etc. The modern day athlete fights other professional athletes. The advancements in training and preperation place modern athletes in a different zone. Most top tier fighters only fight three times a year if that. It's incredible to hear about guys fighting multiple times in a month or a week. But. They're contemperaries were not groom professionals. (old timer meaning before at least the 60's)
    Just my take.
That being said the best fighter I've ever seen at his peak was Roy. An athletic freak who might not posses the toughness of a Ray Robinson but who's athleticism would be super human in comparison to a Jake lomatta.
A peak Roy destroys most if not all between 160 and 175 in my opinion

I can tell you have an emotional attachment to the older fighters but you know good god damn well that that was a bs statement.
