Holmes! Also, if "best" were to mean "most effective" I think it's hard to overlook Mohammad Ali. By the way... how come SRR doesn't get any love here?
Damn, that's a beautiful jab! :good I love it when fighters use it as a weapon, not just defense or a rangefinder. I never saw many Quarterly bouts, I must admit. Time to dig them up.
Yes we heard of him....yes we seen his flicking jab....no we aint impressed Not even close to being a thread ender I'm afraid
Harold Johnson. Out-jabbed both Ezzard Charles and Eddie Machen up at HW when they were supposed to be the best jabbers of their respective divisions in spite of wee t-rex arms.
Well then you're going to hate a lot of opinion on this subject. Many people who have watched boxing for years will say the same thing: Larry Holmes. People will naturally think through heavyweight champions first, and Holmes sticks out in the jab category. There is no questioning that Larry had a GREAT jab. Best of all time? Maybe, maybe not, but it is certainly a solid choice and nothing to hate on.
Holmes jab was a fantastic weapon, though, so generally it is the first person who comes to mind. Wlad, Lewis, Bowe all had good jabs.
I've always been impressed with Dwight Muhammad Qawi's ability to land his jab against much much taller guys. Other than that, my favorite is Pernell Whitaker. The way he used it to disrupt the rythm and the balance of his opponents was magic. He had an intelligent jab, if you see what I mean. In the underrated category, I nominate Jake Lamotta. The way he threw that jab out of a crouch was sneaky and really effective.
Hearns, also an excellent choice. The other people who have mentioned Hagler as well are spot on. I am always amazed at how many people talk about Hagler like he was just some mauling brawler. The guy could box, slip punches, and had an excellent jab.
