Which boxer had the greatest footwork?

I have to dredge up the name Willie Pastrano again...he DID inspire Ali, and when he was "on"..was a thing to behold with his dancing and jabbing.

 

I've always felt it was Wilfredo Gomez.

 

Great choice...just look at his fight with Zarate, when he wasn't beating Zarate's ass, he was exhibiting great footwork and for that matter, everything else was working that night. I think that he was highly tuned...very edgy, almost nervous with respect for Zarate...and all that was channeled the way it should for a great fighter.

 

But the punching power was lacking because of that.

 

True. He admitted this. But overall it worked for him. If he'd have slowed his footwork he would have been hit more and probably would have had a much shorter career as a result. Even an iron chin can only take so much.

 

many people say that maybe Roberto's only possible weakness would be a great mover but only past his prime, SRL was a great mover but Montreal Duran was all over him and one step ahead everytime LOL

Yea Whitaker made a few too many mistakes for me to put him on the same level as Pep when it comes to footwork, not saying his footwork still wasn't great.

Thats because you were watching the wrong pair of feet,you should have been watching Tommys feet,and that maticulous boxing lesson he gave him hand speed,foot speed,and timing.Camacho,Armstrong,Nunn,Ali,Leonard,Norris,Pep for me when Hearns had his legs under him and when he was forced to box is best I've seen along with Wilfred Gomez.

On serious note though when ranking fighters on certain categories there is alway a close second or strong arguments for a whole bunch of other fighters . But when it comes to greatest footwork. I would have to say hands down its Ali, i cant think of too many little guys that could move like him and PFP Ali gets this hands down. Im surprised more people havent mentioned Roy jones(only one vote).

 

Nunn showed good footwork when he was on his "game"
Tomas Hearns had VERY underrated footwork.
For a big guy Wlad have a very good footwork.
Loche should be mentioned on all lists. As do Pep.
Mike Tyson had some work of art footwork(not always though)
Sugar Rays's. Yes I mean both of them.
I liked how Morales used his legs.
Ali is obvious one. Also you have to remember Tunney and Ezzarld Charles.
But my absolute favorite -- Marvin Hagler. And if you disagree with me you can go kill yourself.

i think there are different types of foot work. i would also say that chavez, tyson and frazier had good foot work just in how they could use their feet to cut off the ring. you have to be pretty coordinated to cut off the ring of another fighter... especially if that other fighter is meldrick taylor, tyrell biggs or muhammad ali.

anarci i have love for tapia, i think he and virgill hill where the dark horses against roy jones in having had the best foot speed in the 90's
