Jack Johnson could be pretty intimidating with a smile.

He had a smile tinged with sarcasm and insincerity, that made his opponent think that he saw them as a joke.

He had a lot of them convinced that he actually felt sorry for them!

I guess Tyson, all things considered.

A stare can’t literally hurt you but it can transfix you with the lethal promise of what is about to happen, based on, in no small way, the said fighter’s previously demonstrated ability to seek and destroy.

Still, the stares of Foreman, Liston, Duran and others were just that, they didn’t make a move or literally look like they just might engage you prematurely as Tyson might and did. Suffice to say, while part bally hoo, the guards employed to keep the peace prior to his fight v Lewis were unprecedented.

Harry Greb would be intimidating. He looks mean when he isn't even really trying to.

I think fighter stare downs intimidate the crowd more than the fighters...they never bothered me no matter how mean they looked. Usually when I fighter is intimidated it happens long before the stare down. The guys I paid attention closer at the fighter instructions were the guys that looked loose and weren't interested in staring like a Jack Dempsey they are all business and have been there before.

I usually looked at their body and face for signs of weakness or softness

I loved the look on Peter McNeeley's face as Tyson was staring him down.

Hitman Hearns most definitely. He just looked scary, like a horror movie stalker hell bent on catching another victim to suppress his appetite for destruction. (I feel ya Duran, I feel ya)

Blade Barkley looked rather gnarly. As did Liston and Foreman. And Tyson didn't really need to intimidate until post prison with that McNeeley stare.

I forgot which video it was but a commenter posted this at the Tyson-Ribalta staredown:
"Ribalta looks like he wants to murder someone while Tyson looks like he just came back from murdering someone!"

I always imagine Ali was talking **** to his opponent constantly during every fight.
