If he turned pro, could Angel Espinosa be able to become a world champion?

Really now? A win apiece over Dick Burge and Andy Bowen make for an ATG resume?

And wins over Solly Smith, Jack Everhardt, Eddie Connolly. He's a fighter you should really look into if you think he's a 1 hit wonder. Especially as he beat Walcott twice.

John Henry Lewis- such a great record. I hesitate to put him in my all time top 10 light heavyweights due to no footage of him. I would love to see footage of him.

All of those wins don’t make for an ATG resume, either. And given the circumstances of the Walcott wins, neither do they. They show him to be a very hard man, though, no doubt. Maybe even the best of a limited era.

Calling any of them one hit winners was inflammatory on my part. Good way to get an education from someone who knows better without having to do the leg work myself.

Besides people there is no film of Gene Tunney for me is the biggest enigma. Didn’t get to see him in to many fights and the ones we have are poor quality. I’m not sure if he should be a top ten Hw or just somewhere in the top 50. Looks to have excellent skills and decent speed on film but I’m curious how he would do against sag Ezzard Charles or Archie Moore

Give him another look, he was a beast

Young Griffo deserved to beat Jack McAulliffe, and is a legit ATG at Featherweight and Lightweight. Lavigne got the worst of the first fight but the better of the second and longer one. A month after the second contest Griffo was having to take it easy on a young Joe Gans.

Dick Burge had beaten Jem Carney and even fought at heavyweight.

Lavigne beat plenty other top fighters too. Bowen was one of the canidates to replace McAuliffe until his death

The deck was stacked in Lavigne's favour in his first fight with Walcott before he was champion, but the conditions in the rematch were much fairer, with the weight being at 135Ibs, and Lavigne won pretty emphatically.

From what I’ve read in the past, the bout being held at 135 was something of an unfair condition in and of itself, with Walcott greatly weakening himself in the weight making process. As I recall he was getting clearly the better of things before his stamina gave and Lavigne took over. Still, it’s impressive that Lavigne was able to handle everything Walcott threw at him over a combined 27 rounds being the naturally lighter man.

It was for the Lightweight title. I don't think anything could really be considered unfair about having to make 135 for lightweight, especially with Lavigne being a small Lightweight. Even the stuff about 133 somehow being an unfair condition for Lightweight is really overstated IMO.

I don't think the evidence points Walcott having the better of it until his stamina gave out. The Examiner said the only round Walcott won was the 10th. The Call also gave Lavigne the first round, and certainly gave no impression of Walcott taking any sort of lead.

The Chronicle was more favorable to Walcott, but still gave Lavigne the first and said it was all his after the 7th

I’d like to learn more about heavyweight contender Elmer Ray.
