Someone who can dodge every punch by a inch or who can leave the opponent scratching their head every end of the round thinking “Did I really hit that guy clean?”

Roman Gonzalez. It made me laugh when someone on General said he's a 'tank' and takes too many shots.
Jake LaMotta is another. Even when you touched him it was almost never clean. He was great at rolling his neck and subtly slipping shots. A very underrated technician and ring general due to his pop-culture image.

Completely different fighters but Duran and Whitaker were both excellent at lightweight for this.
    Benitez
    Locche
    Pep
    PBF
Toney when in shape and motivated.

The owners of two of the most celebrated chins in boxing history belong here, in my opinion. Particularly if we are looking for 'subtle' defence and names that wouldn't crop up with the usual suspects.

The Marvelous One: Noted for his thick skull which was likened to a bowling ball, there was more to Hagler seldom being hurt than a Titanium head. He always kept his chin tucked in, his head was always on the move. Outside of Hearns in the first round and Duran, nobody really landed much clean on Marvin to test the chin and that was down to his A grade defence.

Slightly more leftfield but how about Oliver McCall? He has gone on record saying he was a defensive wizard which might be the drugs talking - nobody who saw him in the fourth and fifth rounds of the Lewis rematch were talking about his Willie Pep-like display - but Oliver said that you can't fight the likes of the guys he fought without a decent defence. It was pretty much the basics - keep it tucked into your chest and shoulder and try to go with the blow - but it was effective enough.

This shouldn't downplay how tough each man was. They were other-worldly, even by boxing's standards, but I think there was more to their record of outstanding durability than simply being able to withstand huge punches because they just could.

Eubank seemed to be a hell of a guy to fight in that aspect. Awkward, and good at taking just that bit off a punch.

But this is a hard one, really, since most of the greats were good at rubber necking and taking the brunt off of shots. The legend behind chins like Ali's and McCallums rests much with their ability to do just that. Same with Holy.

Duran, of course. Most of the masters, really.

But among the ones I wouldn't class as "masters" there is Eubank and also Froch. Awkward ****s with very good chins in their own right, but also good at taking just that crucial bit off of punches.

Julio Cesar Chavez had a very subtle defense not just with head movement but also his guard. Chavez could quietly deflect and take the steam off punches that seemed to landed cleanly on him.

Subtle defence, my first thought is Ricardo Lopez and Joe Louis everything moved so purposefully that there defence is largely ignored.

    Exactly.
A lot of guys who are known for iron chins also have excellent defence - keep the chin tucked in, very rarely catch punches on the jaw, and know how to subtly roll and ride punches out.
    Chuvalo was another one.

    Saul Alvarez has subtle defence.

Like many questions on this forum, Joe Louis is the all time answer.

    Very good points.

Chuvalo also claimed that he kept his chin tucked, generally preventing shots to the more vital areas.

IMO, the vision of George and his often misshapen post fight features belie that claim somewhat but perhaps while it’s nice to be afforded a great chin as and when tested, it isn’t necessarily desirable to be framed as an easy to hit, constantly pounded, punching bag, impervious to being hurt. They be like, wait, there was some “skill” involved.

We should also have realistic expectations as to who we deem as great defensive fighters - they’re facing other well skilled pros, sometimes over the full route - they’re not going to avoid every shot - but they will generally get hit that much less often than average and also take the heat off punches that do find the mark etc.

Also, being “too” subtle can unfortunately cost a fighter in the face of less observant judges, fans and commentators. I remember an announcer wetting himself over 6-7 consecutive shots he thought DLH landed on Sweet Pea - the replay showing that basically none of the punches landed on the swerving, sliding, back pedalling Whittaker. Sheesh!

Bennie Briscoe fits the criteria. He never lifted his chin and was always sturdy.

I quoted Dwight Muhammad Qawi on a similar thread
But another one that comes to mind is Mike McCallum. He had very subtle defense. McCallum was a smooth technician & operator. He befuddled Toney many times in their fights (as you'll see in the highlights).
