Would you prefer to have a career like Buster Douglas or someone like Arturo Gatti. Buster was a one hit wonder but damn what a hit. He reached the aboslute highest level of the sport but pretty much just had 15 minutes of fame. Gatti fell short when he faced the greats but was in the spotlight for a long time and has been in many memorable fights.
Gatti any day the man is a legend and probably bound for the hall of fame not on skills but on popularity.
Anyone who took the beating he took in Ward 1 + 3, Rodriguez, Ruelas, Robinson 1 +2, etc. etc. deserves to be in the hall of fame. Some more gifted fighters could have gone on to be ATG's if they had half the heart that man had.
I dare say that when the history of the sport is written buster's name will carry more weight than Gatti's just because of that one win. It is the biggest upset in the history of the sport
Arguably the biggest upset. I personally don't see Douglas outlasting Gatti. People have already started attributing that victory as more of Tyson losing it than Douglas winning it.
one the one hand while Tyson wasn't on top orm, I don't think any credit should be reoved from Buster. After all, it's not like he squeaked by, he really beat the **** out of Tyson, worse than anybody else ever did, and poorly prepared or no, it was the best version of Tyson anybody ever beat.
I don't think there is anything arguable about it. Odds were 41-1. Nobody was betting on whether Buster would win since that seemed so stupid they were just betting on whether or not he would make it through the first round. In terms of betting odds there has never been anything close in terms of an upset. The fact that people would rather pretend that it was Tyson slipping rather than Buster winning just shows how impossible it seemed that anyone could beat him at the time
In any event, that was one occasion. Gatti was entertaining fans, and selling out arenas for his entire career. And to answer the actual thread question, Aturo Gatti. He shined every time he took an hellacious beating but won anyway.
Your right, but damn did he fight like hell. He could have given up when he got knocked down, but I bet he thought of his mother and got up to give Tyson the beating he deserved for marrying a golddigger. My answer would be to have Buster's career due to the enormous payday he got for the Holyfield fight. Gatti don't have that kind of loot wit all of his fights.
gotta be gatti even tho he fell short of some fights its the way he fought that will be remembered and thats why people came to see him cuz they know he wasnt a guy to not give you your moneys worth
