Which champion in any division had the most fights and wins in one calendar year? Most champions fight once or twice a year, three times if we're lucky. Has any champion fought more than JCC did in 1985? 5 from 5. Includes three title fights.
Greb fought 45 fights in 1919, winning them all. He wasn't champion until 1923 though. Toney fought nine times (IIRC) in 1991.
Most fights by a world champion in a calendar year: Ted Kid Lewis 58 (1911) Most wins by a world champion in a calendar year: Ted Kid Lewis 51 (1911)
In terms of your question, are you asking which champ had the most fights per calendar year while they were the champ?
All the old Ring boxing encyclopedias have Greb fighting 49 times in 1919. I will take their word over the revisionists era
Yeah that's right. Some pretty good answers so far but most are examples BEFORE they were champ. I'm after WHILE they were a world champ. Because there seems to be a huge correlation of becoming champ and having limited fights comparatively. Edit: Apologies for not making that clear in my first post.
Ok, if you mean most fights/wins in a calendar year by a reigning world champ: Jack Dillon had 27 fights (23-1-3) in 1915, when reigning LH champion. Greb and Leonard were both 24-1, in 1925 and 1919 respectively - also when both were world champions.
My hat off to you. You truly are a boxing encyclopedia. Do you have the stats for most wins with no losses by a reigning world champ in one calendar year?
Without a single loss? Hmm... I'm far from sure about this one, but my guess would be Pep, who was 18-0 for the year 1946, where he was champ the whole time. But, as said, not sure at all!
