    Scar Tissue,

Valdes has a good case but I’m curious when did baker have a good case to get a shot at marcianos crown?

The only problem Is at 21, he was almost too young. Walcott of the first Marciano fight would have certainly cleaned the 21 year old Floyd’s clock

Dangerous opppnent no doubt with his fast hands and power, but Floyd was nowhere near mature enough or durable enough to last with Marciano in 56

Hopkins cleaned house decently. He caught most of the top 5 middles of the second half of the 90s. He missed Castro (moved up), Bradley (injury), Quincy (lost to Hopkins victim Holmes), and Cherifi (lost to Holmes and Tito).

Cooper had a glass jaw. Liston would have murdered him

Some say Frazier avoided fighting the big punchers like Liston Shavers Lyle Mac Foster

Except In 72 he took on two unranked journeyman instead of a top 5 rated powerful puncher like Mac Foster

My buddy Doug Lord got his fighter Terry Daniels the title shot against Joe Frazier in New Orleans through his connections with the Dallas Cowboys pro football team who were playing in the Super Bowl the next day.

    Jan 15, 1972
    • This bout was on the eve of Super Bowl VI, which was also in New Orleans. Frazier correctly predicted the Dallas Cowboys would beat the Miami Dolphins.
    • Frazier's purse was $250,000, and Daniels' was $35,000.
    • Frazier was such a prohibitive favorite that Las Vegas oddsmakers didn't even establish a betting line on the fight.
    • Frazier floored Daniels five times.

Suz, Baker's best run was from the beginning of '54 until the end of '55 where he compiled a 13 bout unbeaten streak with wins over Joe Baksi, Jimmy Slade, Nino Valdes and 3 wins over Rex Layne. He also beat during that patch Julio Mederos who was coming off a of a knockout over Roland LaStarza. And Baker also knocked out Willie James who was coming off a of a KO over Olympic Gold Medalist Eddie Sanders (Sanders unfortunately died after the KO). Like I said, it was a really good run for Baker. I think Marciano still would have won had they fought, but I think Baker at least deserved the crack at the title.

If that was their thinking its odd they would match Joe against George Foreman twice.

All the examples so far are from middleweight up. An obvious lower weight example is Duran at lightweight. By Jan '78 and the unification win over DeJesus, there was no one left in the division to challenge him. Arguello won the super featherweight title that same month so was his only legitimate challenger left but was not yet a lightweight.

With the exception of Peralta, he was the only person to fight GEORGE F UCKIING FOREMAN TWICE! Think it's safe to say he didn't duck anybody.

Foster was ranked in the top 5 by RING in 71 and 72.

Frazier instead fought 2 unrated guys in 72

'72 was really the black year of his reign. Of any almost. He gets too much of a pass of a pass for not facing a decent contender for two years after FOTC, that's true.
