Okay. I like your way to see things.

I can use it for any other fighter though "the fact that he didn't beat (insert anything here) doesn't mean that he would lost to them."

The Dempsey murder of big heavyweights is misleading .. Willard was old and inactive, Fulton had a weak chin and Firpo despite being a crude guy almost stopped Dempsey .. it is a huge jump in class from any of the above to a Lewis, Bowe or Klitschko ..

The following men would beat Marciano:

    Joe Louis
    Muhammad Ali
    Wladimir Klitschko
    Lennox Lewis
    Riddick Bowe
    George Foreman
    Sonny Liston
    Mike Tyson

    50/50 Match

    Larry Holmes
    Joe Frazier
    Evander Holyfield

    Marciano beats everyone else

    Joe Louis has a chance
    Ali has a chance
    Tyson has a chance
    Vladimir K has a chance
    Lewis has a chance
    Foreman has a chance

but I can see Marciano beating them as well and would not count him out

He Grant & SuzieQ are I think closest to the truth.

Look Rocky beat everyone put in front of him. Though should have had a loss vs. Ted Lowery, & some debate the 1st LStarza fight. Yet it was a pretty weak era, & while his toughness, power, endurance & some subtle skills were amazing, he never fought a very talented Big Man.

AND swarmers have the most trouble with sluggers, all the best folks he beat were boxers.

Weighing in the 180's with a tiny reach, being relatively slow overall, & not that accurate would absolutely be too much to overcome against the best of the best HWs.

That takes nothing away from him. But no man with these physical deficets could beat some of the best ever. Hell if he could even be competitive against many ATGs as a smallish CW (which I think he would be) would be remarkable.

Rocky at the very least was remarkable. The least he would be is competative. Against any fighter. Nobody beats remarkable fighters in their prime easily.

I think you have to look at it that way, especially when there wasn’t that type of opponent around to fight.

The gulf exists because they almost never fought 188 pound guys .. I made direct comparisons ... what direct comparisons of 188 pound world class men are you referring to that the Klitschkos fought ?

Simply not true .. there is an extensively long list of great fighters in their prime that were over matched and destroyed by larger, also great fighters .. Rocky, a terrific cruiserweight, matches up poorly against much bigger, top or near top guys and many would have either quickly over powered him or tore him up ..

its impossible to bring a man back in time or forward without making concessions to the time, we can only go by greatness, in fact Ali who was very large at the time at 6"2.5 and 210-215, I think only Willard and Primo were larger as far as heavyweight champs but because of the recent weight, muscle, methods guys have grown bigger and distances less

Marciano was a natural heavyweight trained down to the small waist and fit as a fiddle. Its hard today because everyone is out of whack with new training methods to determine there true weight

Big guys were just not good enough historically except for recent times but I think we all know that the chin stays the same. Lewis was stopped by decent punchers 2 X Vlad 3x AND VITALI 1 TIME, stamina had a lot to do with 2 of Vlads losses and Brewster was a decent puncher at most.

Great is great, good is good and era's are era's My 3 greatest heavyweights are Louis,Ali,Marciano and in there own era they would be very hard to beat....PERIOD

So this is an anti-Rocky thread then? :D

Okay, allowing for the fact that it's in Marciano's era, I think he clears out pre-Louis. The guys with the best chance from ye olden era are obviously Johnson and Jeffries, but with clinches being broken, I think that Marciano does good good work in the late rounds versus both.

Dempsey obviously has a very very good chance, but if he can't stop Rocky early, Ii think he might get taken out late. I flip-flop on this one though. Baer is interesting too, but I pick Rocky. So:

    Joe Louis
    Sonny Liston
    Muhammad Ali
    Joe Frazier
    George Foreman
    Larry Holmes
    Mike Tyson
    Evander Holyfield
    Lennox Lewis
    Wladimir Klitschko

This is only from the recognised, proper proper champs and absolute-prime for absolute-prime.

Joe Louis is 50/50. Prime vs Prime.

Just look at the actual match. Joe was not that far gone and got demolished.

    My list.

    Ali
    Foreman
    Holmes ( By decision)

    50/50

    Joe Louis
    Tyson
    Lewis
    Vitali
    Dempsey
    Tunney
    Frazier

No, it is a serious attempt to separate myth from reality.
