detroit give us robinson, louis and hearns. the michigan state has given us a good few greats. the grand rapids area give us ketchel and mayweather pitsburgh as mentioned in another has an illustrious history. so as philly new york has got to be in the mix
Brooklyn has given us Tyson, Bowe, Judah, Briggs. Ok so theyre not all greats I remember watching some vid on Youtube with Roger Mayweather commenting how the best boxers come from the mid west, he then talks about Griffin kicking Roy Jones ass and Douglas kicking Tysons ass.
Well certainly not mine. Boxing is hardly even mentioned here, never was. Greg Haugen hails from the town I live in, and apparently lives here again after some time in Vegas.
I'm from Maryland, so I got Sugar Ray Leonard Joe Gans Young Peter Jackson George Chaney Qawi was born here but was raised in New Jersey.
Tacoma used to be a hotbed for amateurs. Considering the state of American amateur boxing, is it safe to assume Tacoma has had a dropoff?
I used to box out of the Al Davies gym there in Tacoma....you're right, there were a lot of great ones out of that gym. I knew a few, or was around them anyway.......Davey Lee Armstrong, Leo Randolph, Johnny Bumphus, Rocky Lockridge originally came out of that gym before moving to NJ, Emmett Linton.......I knew Sugar Ray Seales as well as any of them......a bunch of others I'm sure I'm missing. But yeah, you don't hear of much these days. Or it could just be that I don't pay attention to it anymore.
