Yeah the Germans called it the Ronson or something (also the coffin for six brothers I think) - unfortunate tendency to light up when hit.

EDIT - just checked - the Soviets were given a few, and nicknamed it 'the coffin for 5 brothers' and the Grant 'the coffin for seven brothers'.

our biggest asset, was huge numbers of planes, tanks, arms, and troops, far away from any retribution.

They came up with several designs I think - as well as numerous cheap but ingenious jet and rocket fighter designs towards the end of the war, but it was really a case of too little too late.

Realistically when the Soviet Blitzkrieg failed in 41 Germany was on it's way to losing the war (though that's easy as hell to say in hindsight)...the country simply wasn't geared up to fighting a protracted war of attrition.

can't keep taking on adversaries with bigger population than yourselves. russia, and america. no way to actually do harm to america, itself. they got lucky the french, brits, belgians, and dutch butchered the start of the western war though.

Yeah - a pair of brothers - Horten I think came up with several flying wing designs and the last and largest seemed to have military potential, but by that point in the war the emphasis had switched to fighter defense. I think the US also did some work on a flying wing bomber post war also which may have been inspired by the Horten(?) designs - though with the B-2 I suspect it's a case of Form Following Function as much as a direct inspiration.

i believe the dutch had an underpowered plane, almost identical to the p-38 lightning, at the start of the war.

Not heard about that one - I'll look it up. By the standards of the later years of the war of course just about all the early planes woulda been considered underpowered. AFAIK The NL has never really had a major engine manufacturer of their own which could have proven a bottleneck to domestic design and production. That said, to be blunt there was almost nothing the Dutch could have done which would have changed the outcome of the German invasion in the slightest.

Edit: D'Oh:patsch - Fokker. Dunno if they used Dutch build engines or not tho.
