Cotto is the first that comes to mind.

Yes, Vicente Mosquera was reigning champ when Valero beat him.

Yup, he's getting into the habit of picking up vacant straps.

I agree. It's time that he steps up and proves he's the real deal.

Abraham seems to have done well with this concept. He won a title Taylor vacated, and has now defended it 9 times against tomato cans, bartenders, old men, and undeafeated prospects with feather fists.

One particular vacant title winner comes to mind, Ken Norton, who was awarded the WBC heavyweight championship, by the putrid, dishonest frog , WBC dictator, and Don Kings best friend, Jose Suliman. He was handed the title when Leon Spinks was stripped of the WBC title because he signed to fight Ali rather than #1 contender Norton. Ken had won a 15 round "eliminator" against Jimmy Young , but that was not, at the time , a title fight. The newly crowned "champ" lost to Larry Holmes in his first defense.

Is it safe to say that fighters who chase Vacant belts are somewhat protected more than others?

I would say there's some truth to that.
