Hatton, Calzaghe and Khan are all massive names in Britain. Haye is getting there too. I may be a bit off with Khan, because I'm in Bolton too, so I'm bound to hear of him all the time. Hatton and Calzaghe are huge though. Hatton is a lot bigger than Calzaghe, too. Pacquiao has the biggest fanbase in his own country, followed by Hatton.
Outside of even casual boxing fans.. household name? For actual sports fans, who might just tune into say a PPV at the bar? Oscar, Roy Jones Jr., lately honestly Floyd. That's it, end of story. No one else fits the bill. Calzaghe? You must be ****ing kidding me. Not in the US.
When Chavez use to fight every single mexican was drunk and watching it...I remember the camacho fight in my uncles house there was like 30 mexicans watching it...ridiculous man it was almost a mexican holiday. Today only fighters who come close are Pac Hatton and DLH.
I was at a bar the other night and I heard a group of about 8 younger guys (21-24?) going on and on about Mike Tyson v. Kimbo Slice. I jumped in to the conversation only to learn that NONE of these 8 guys had a clue who ANYBODY in boxing was. Not Pacquiao, not Mayweather (except for 2 or 3 who probably saw him at WrestleMania), not Cotto, NOBODY. But they were throwing out names like Chuck Lidell, Rampage Jackson and a bunch of other names that I'd never heard. It was a scary reality check for me.
Tyson,Klitschkos, Toney, Hopkins,Calzaghe,Hatton,Mayweather, Lennox Lewis, Oscar, PBF, Corrales/Castillo, Gatti, Sugar Shane, Winky Wright, Taylor, Pavlik will be soon enough, Barrera,Morales, Cotto, Judah, Tszyu
This is everyone I ever meet and ask if they like boxing; Everyone and their mother knows the name DLH. People now know Floyd but are still angry over DLH fight with him. Some people know Hatton but they are more exited about the soccer type chants than anything else. I was at a party and we were talking about the Yankees. I asked everyone if they liked boxing, one guy said yes. We talked about Mayweather and we agreed on how talented the man is. He brought up Cotto and I got really excited but he had only seen one fight and didn't know who Mosley was!:huh Other than this no one knows anything. Being a boxing fan can be lonely these days. :verysad
Household Name means that most people know the name. I guarantee that MOST people do not know Toney, Hopkins,Calzaghe,Hatton, Corrales/Castillo, Gatti, Sugar Shane, Winky Wright, Taylor, Pavlik will be soon enough, Barrera,Morales, Cotto, Judah, Tszyu
Pacman is pretty much Money ever here. Say Pacquiao to a Filipino and we go nuts. Well not really. Saw the guy from a far off distance.
Hopkins is not a household name. In fact I'd bet over 95% of Americans have never heard of him. To be a household name it means the general public is aware of this person even if they don't watch boxing. I think currently in the US only DLH and maybe Mayweather fit into this category.
Calzaghe and Hatton are household names in the UK. I was talking to a friend of mine in Edinburgh and happened to mention that I was going to Vegas to see Hopkins vs Calzaghe, she instantly said "Ooh, he's that Welsh hottie right?" Calzaghe won BBC Sporting Personality of the year, that makes you an instant house hold name in Britain.
Household name means that people besides boxing fans know who they are. I can't speak for the rest of the world but in America Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr and mabey Roy Jones Jr. Make up the list.
The biggest stars here are as follows (current fighters) 1. Ricky Hatton 2. Joe Calzaghe 3. Amir Khan 4. David Haye 5. Audley Harrison (for all wrong reasons) All time, probably: 1. Henry Cooper 2. Ricky Hatton 3. Frank Bruno
