In Iceland: Nobody In the UK I'd say Hatton and recently Calzaghe, the others aren't even on the radar really. Guys like Benn, Eubank, Tyson, Holyfield are more well known
well at school its only mayweather out of the americans, they're like who's oscar on the dole, never seen him fight. by the way, some cocky **** had the nerve to say Muhammad Ali was ****, don't worry i took the **** out of him ali style.
If you went down the street and knocked on ten doors and said you were taking a poll aand asked to name any 5 boxers that comes to their minds it would be: Muhammad Ali Mike Tyson and then maybe most would know Evander Holyfield, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard, Sugar Ray Robinson and Oscar De La Hoya. Asked to name an active boxer the only current boxer that MIGHT get mentioned by by most would be De La Hoya. (and I don't even like him). That's it! There are NO household names in boxing today. What a shame where the sport has fallen.
Just asked my 8 year old daughter + my wife. My daughter named Hatton + Mayweather - she watched this one with me. My missus said Naz + Mohammed (I assume she means Ali).
I wouldn't say Hopkins is a household name. Holyfield, Mayweather, DLH and Jones Jr., yes. I think most sports fans in the US recognize the names Bernard Hopkins, Ricky Hatton, Winky Wright, Antonio Tarver, Manny Pacquiao and maybe James Toney, but your average housewife would have never heard of them. If Tommy Hearns is still officially active, then I guess that's one more also. Sergio Mora is more of a household name in the US than Joe Calzaghe. Whoever said Joe was fooling themselves.
At this point I would say that only Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are household names. If asked to name other boxers people would probably say; Muhammad Ali Mike Tyson and probably Oscar De La Hoya and Evander Holyfield Other than that I don't think any others are universally known....not even the Klitchko's. Its a shame that boxing is on the back pages and usually not mentioned on Sportscenter.
