I agree. It was good match ups for once. I usually fall asleep or get incredibly bored during the early fights but I watched all of these fights because they were good match ups. I was also happy with a simple 4 fight card. I prefer 4 long good match ups rather than watching 6 rounders.
He danced around and outmanoeuvred a smaller, older guy who never had any physical tools to challenge him. Mayweather had every physical advantage so its not like he neutralised an opponent who could actually give him any trouble. A cautious defensive minded win over an opponent who usually fights against smaller fighters. That aint a masterclass. If he had done that to fighter who could actually challenge him it would be.
UFC I expected Mayweather to easily defeat Marquez - but not try for an inspired finish - content to build a big points lead and ride it. Floyd did a great job of making Marquez pay every time he tried to get himself into range and Marquez had no alternative.
Especially with an opponent where he has all the advantages against. There was no hope here that the smaller man would have the leverage of speed and quickness in his arsenal. All Marquez had was heart and moxie to do battle with here. Mayweather doesn't have time for all that drama.
If you are going to let your hands go then Marquez is about as good as an opponent as any. I understand the safety approach against DLH, Baldo etc The size and power aspect is one of their only shots at beating you. Floyd turns the heat on too slow and doesn't open up unless you are a corpse. He reminded me why I love him but he also reminded me why it isn't a great idea for him to be the face of boxing. Pac ****s people up and at the end of the day we all watch combat sports because we are bloody thirsty lusting for violence to delivered in a scientific yet destructive and devastating form.
This is one of the reasons why I love MMA. These guys aren't taught the belief that the record is what counts most. Floyd will guard that zero with his life, but only when it's threatened. Problem is, he's not taking on the guys that can threaten it most. This is why the clamor for Floyd/Pac is so high. They want to see Floyd live or die against someone who can actually raise the stakes that high against him.
Wow, Mayweather put on a brilliant performance tonight. Incredibly skillful performance. And I thought it was a good fight. Shows you how short MMA fans attention spans are. They get off watching a bunch of short, unskilled fighters KO each other within 1 round. Not to mention the undercard for the boxing event had far superior fighters on paper than UFC 103 did. UFC just recycled their TUF trash and put a faded, shot Crocop against unproven JDS as the co headliner.
Mayweather was brilliant, but if you think a guy who landed less than 100 punches over 12 rounds made it a "good fight", then you need to return to the General Forum with the rest of the know nothings.
What? Pacquiao is going to get murdered by Floyd. It wont even be close. Id much rather watch Mosley/Mayweather. And thats BS about protecting records. Its called fighting intelligently. If you want to watch a bunch of knuckleheads walk into punches than MMA is your sport. Could Mayweather have turned it up a notch and finished Marquez? Yes, but at least Marquez was a live opponent who can capitalize off other peoples mistakes. Silva let Cote, Leites hang in there forever despite them being completely outmatched. Was Silva trying to protect his ZERO? Is GSP trying to protect his record by playing it super cautious and going to decision every fight? What about Machida? Its called fighting smart.
I never said it wasnt one-sided. But the artistry, skill in this fight was phenomenal. It was probably one of the most impressive performances ive ever seen. Marquez is a legit fighter and he couldnt even touch Mayweather. Marquez was throwing 3-4-5-6 punch combinations and almost nothing was landing. I'm sorry thats impressive.
Silva doesn't have a zero... neither does GSP... and Machida's style is patient, but when he can finish an opponent, he does. If he was Floyd, after battering Evans against the fence, he would've returned to the middle of the cage and went back to leg kicks. Floyd could've put away Marquez last night and chose not to. That's the difference. You try to finish off Jon Fitch and see where it gets you.
Indeed. It's a tad bit shameful but I do understand his rationale and it has a lot to do with the "0." True. As base as it must sound, it is true. Ahhh, yes, the "0." Can't blame Floyd for protecting it. Not only is it an incredible achievement, but it's his chief selling point. Most people who tune into Floyd do so in order to watch him get beat. Once it's proven that he's no longer invincible then he loses those fans . . . and, most importantly to Floyd, the money that comes with them. Therefore he must protect that "0" by any means necessary . . . and he does.
