Ferdie Pacheco seemed to think that the Foreman fight did a lot of damage and he was showing signs after that
Ike Ibeabuchi was also never the same after taking Tua's hellacious left hooks. Ike complained of severe head aches after this fight.
Ali started with the rope a dope and expanded on this with "the mirage" for his bout with Lyle. Frazier three was a brutal fight. Watch that bout closely. Ali came so close to losing and most in Ali's position would have. Watch round 11. Ali was OUT on his feet and yet came back firing with both hands.
I agree he was mismatched a few times against some good chins and it didn't turn out so good Lyle, Quarry and Cobb....he could fight and punch but he had a hard time with tough world class guys especially if they had a decent chin.
I agree. No certainty at all but I always ask myself whether Muhammad's health would have been better for longer had he retired after Manila.
Agree ... that's exactly when he should have stepped down. After a war like that, nobody would have blamed him at all, and would have spared him more punishment from Norton, Shavers, Holmes, etc ... though to be frank, I can see a similar outcome as when he did retire; at some point, missing the limelight, he'd make a comeback - and lose again.
As soon as a Doctor walks away you know the damage is already done. Ferdie left because he could no longer put his name to what was going on. If you need a date this would be it. Ferdie would have foreseen what was going to develop and he got out. Without being punchy a lot of boxers speech will change somewhat but it's only seen as an occupational Hazzard. Many will function better for their age than people who never boxed. The only noticeable thing about them might be a thick tongue. However, Many of these examples will get dementia earlier than they would had they not boxed at all. Over all, especially if they lived clean lives, most ex boxers probably live better, and got more out of life, than most people who never boxed who developed socially acceptable health problems through smoking. But an irresponsibly handled fighter who does not take advice and goes against medical warnings is his own worst enemy. Everyone must look after themselves. The alarming thing with Ali was he stood more chance than anyone of getting out of boxing unscathed. He really could have if he had that type of personality. But he didn't. And that's the way he wanted it to be because successful people who achieve the unbelievable do it by pushing things to the limit all the time and take diabolical risks. That's the guy he was.
A very underrated fight was Ali vs Jim Robinson. Robinson hammered Ali! How Ali came back, I will never know.
