we've all been there, you're talking with family or friends about boxing&some idiot says 'i dont see the point its just 2 guys punching each other in the head' now the natural 1st reaction is to give said idiot a slap but occasionally you can go 1 better by putting a classic fight on&shutting them up,what im getting at is,if you could show 1 fight which you feel defines the beauty, brilliance, skill&brutality of boxing what would it be? my personal choice:corrales v castillo 1
i cant even count the amount of people ive shown that trilogy!my fiancee knows them fights of by heart i watch it that often
CorralesV castillo 1. From a british domestic point of view, Eubank Benn 1, Watson V Benn and unfortunately Watson V Eubank 2 because that fight showed courage beyond belief and their first fight was an epic.
if i were to get into a discussion about boxing i would want to bring up a more recent fight so i can prove that boxing is a great sport today. with that said, ill pick Hatton v Mayweather there's no other fight where the atmosphere was so intense because of the crowd. they sang the whole damn fight! you gotta love the pride. :good plus it was a bout with two completely different styles from two undefeated fighters. pressure fighter vs. pure boxer with the pressure winning early and the boxer taking it at the end.
True I was there atmopshere was fantastic. even at the end when hatton was on his arse I said to my dad he might have lost but listen to the crowd still singing his name. It was buzzing on the strip afterwards as well.
So many fights to choose from, but for a combo of the fine art of pugilism and straight up slugging, I'll go with these: Leonard - Hearns I and Sanchez - Gomez
Although there are many great fights, and there are fighters obviously that i like more... There is one fight that i think, if i had to use as an ambasador to our sport so to speak.... There would be two fights that i cant choose between. Rafael Marquez vs Vasquez These two warriors touched my soul with their brutal and glorious fight... pick one. Each shot thrown with ferocity, yet with a timed, skilled execution that takes the breath away, almost as much as when those shots land. And you see the toll it starts to take on the fighters, yet still needing to use skill along with the violence. the other is Trinidad vs Vargas A young kid knocked down twice in the first minute of a fight with a boxing legend.... but through sheer will, spirit, and skill.... fights his way back in the fight. Showing the soul of what boxing truly means to me... showing who you are inside, being able to fight through the adversity against overwelming odds.... and using slight, subtle moves (that he rarely gets credit for doing when he was young) to dodge punches, turn his opponents, or fire off combos. In the end.... showing that boxing is unforgiving, to even the bravest of warriors... and that you pay a price higher then any other athletes for crossing that point of no return that only boxing has.
Yeah i see your point. Although it wasnt that great of a fight, it does show how intense the sport can be.
If the question is "which fight was the most exciting or my favorite" it's definitely the Corrales-Castillo, Gatti-Ward, Barrera-Morales and of course the Vazquez-Marquez rivalry if we take the 21st century. But which fight defines boxing for you is a whole different question. If I have to choose from the recent time, Id pick CALZAGHE-KESSLER without hesitation. EVERYTHING boxing has to offer was in that fight. Speed, skill, power, rivalry, history, difference in style, crazy punch output, defense, offense, boxing match, brawl, changes of pace, tactics, aggression, counter-punching, and of course two undefeated records. Brawls define boxing for the sport fan, superbly skilled but still very exciting bouts define boxing for those who know about it a little bit more (boxing experience in training, a few hundred watched fight, a few dozen of live events, little bit of knowledge of boxing history etc). Calzaghe-Kessler was an all-time boxing classic, you can look back here 25 years from now and everybody will remember that as a masterful fight.
Hagler Hearns, Castillo Corrales, Gatti Ward 1, 2, and 3. Pavlik-Miranda are a few that come to mind.
Barrera vs. Morales, Vazquez vs Marquez, mexican fighters are amazing (I'm not mexican BTW), Gatti vs Ward, Corrales vs Castillo. there are a lot classic fights Sugar Ray Leonard vs Mano de Piedra Duran, Ali vs Foreman. All those fights are remembered by boxing fans around the world.
