Physically, I think he peaked about 1979-80. In terms of ring intellect, experience, and confidence, it was around 1982. He moved less by 1982, but had the savvy to make it work real well for him.

Between the first Shavers fight in 78 to Leon Spinks in 81. He was slipping by the time he fought Cooney. Holmes in his prime not only takes the Klitschko's but the highly OVERATED (on this web site) L.Lewis.
Holmes was never the same after his fight with Witherspoon. A fight I thought Spoon won. Both fighters went to the hospital after the fight. Spoon to get stiches in his wrist and Holmes to keep from dying. It was some of the most grueling 12 rounds I ever watched.
