By worked up i mean edge of your pants anticipation, biting your finger nails waiting for the first bell with absolutely no idea who was going to win. For myself it has to be Hagler / Hearns. Somehow i managed to get through the entire following day not knowing the result as it was shown on ITV time delayed from the previous night. I was all for Hagler in that bout and what made it even worse was the fact that i did overhear on the radio that the fight was stopped in the 3rd round so when Marvin suffered that cut i figured that was it. Never been a fight for me since that got me worked up beforehand like that one. Another was Holmes - Ali, i guess i bought into the smokescreen regarding Ali's weight etc but we all got to believe in miracles i guess.....Never watched that fight again to this day and never will. On a side note, i used to get stressed out in a slightly lesser way when Seb Coe was going to race Steve Ovett
Foreman/Lyle, how could you not be on the edge of your seat watching that one. Another was Foreman/Norton as that may have been the most awesome show of power I personally have seen.
One comes straight mind from very recently : Carl Froch vs George Groves in terms of not knowing who was going to win (although I had a sneaking feeling Groves was going to do it) Remember having that total fear thing going on before Benn-McClellan aswell
Leonard-Hearns I Sanchez-Gomez Pryor-Arguello I Spinks-Qawi All Corrales-Castillo and Marquez-Vasquez fights after the first in each series.
ok...this will get me looked down upon.....but i thought herbie hide was the second coming of ali...before his fight with bowe i had told a lot of friends and work colleagues that he was going to cause a shock..and whats more do it easily....i had it all worked out...speed would be the difference...bowe would be hitting air and look like he'd be underwater compared to hide who would be hitting him 4 to 1 and really hurting him...i told them all about the devestating power hide had, the style and speed....he'd school bowe.......i had it built up a lot and got as the title asks very worked up for it. i know...i know
And so with me RJ. This fight I saw ringside in 1971, had special meaning to me as I saw both Frazier and Clay box in the amateurs, and the fact that Frazier and Ali were both undefeated and bitter rivals added much anxiety and tension for the packed house at MSG. I had the foresight to bring a pair of binoculars to the bout as we sat in the end balcony...What a night, what a fight ! This event ALONG with the Ray Robinson vs Randy Turpin fight at the old Polo Grounds, were the 2 most memorable main events I ever saw ringside by far...cheers.
Vitali Klitschko vs Lennox Lewis. I was nervous the whole day, then watching the fight live on TV during night (in europe) and I was really really involved in this fight. Recently I remember the 12th round of Chavez Jr. vs Sergio Martinez got me worked up.
I am with the opening post it was Hagler/Hearns. Despite being in South London and only ten at the time everybody was seemingly talking about it. And I simply could not get my head around it. The Hearns that beat Duran was unbeatable, but Hagler 'never' lost...
Patterson - Johansson I I heard it on the radio when I was a kid. It was the first upset I had ever seen or heard. At the time I thought Patterson was a real champion and couldn't understand what was happening and how it was happening.
Loads of fights Hagler vs hearns Benn vs eubank I & II Benn vs Watson Kaylor vs christie Kaylor vs gumbs Minter vs antuofermo II palomino vs green Pryor vs arguello I Benn vs McClellan Loads more
I would imagine that it would have been my pick too, had I been alive then. For me it's probably Tyson-Spinks for the lineal heavyweight world championship. I was reasonably confident of a Tyson victory, but there was enough doubt there to cause me to have lots of butterflies in my stomach. I'm pretty sure they were breeding or something. Hagler-Hearns was a massive fight and there was so much tension and hype about that one that it was unreal. I was a little young to fully appreciate the magnitude of the event, but I knew it was a big, big fight.
