    1987 Tyson win unanimous decision over Tony Tucker?

    1988 Tyson Kos Michael Spinks in 1 ?

    There is objective reality, where it is Spinks, & then there is the Boxing world, where you can, “identify,” as champ.

    Tucker the earliest and Spinks the latest. If Spinks had never fought again after Cooney Tucker would probably be viewed as the fight where Tyson became lineal champ. Tucker was unbeaten champ and Tysons first top 5 opponent.

    But yeah Smith and Berbick had gotten their alphabet belts by upsetting Witherspoon and Pinklon. Those are not the answer. At best they were the 9th and 10th best HWs in the world. Tyson, Spinks, Holmes, Tucker, Witherspoon, Pinklon, Tubbs would all have been considered better and with hindsight Buster was clearly better too.

    I'm with you here, Shay.
    Imo he was never going to be the true top man till he beat the guy who beat Holmes.
    Wouldn't matter if there's ten boxing federation, with their own belt, it's got to be the lineal for me.

    When he beat Tucker he had a claim, when he beat Spinks he became the champion.

    Absolutely! Mike Tyson has the distinction of becoming the second Heavyweight Lineal Champion to capture the belt with a first round stoppage, Sonny Liston being the first (although I believe a sensible referee would have given Jack Dempsey the honor first, since he totally ruined and defeated Jess Willard in the first round).

    The correct answer is Spinks.

    Michael Spinks was the rightful and lineal world champ until Mike Tyson beat him. The others were belt-holders.

    Berbick = a titlest

    Tucker = a unified titlest

    Spinks = the champion

    I consider him the best HW in the world prior to his win over Spinks, but that win established him as the lineal champion.

    Mike himself said Berbick, FWIW. That's when he considers himself to have become a Champion. That was his Joe Frazier TKO 11 Buster Mathis, regardless of what the WBA did.

    The correct answer is Spins, albeit Tyson was obviously the best heavyweight in the world, well before that.
