Which fight ruined Tyson?

Prove you wrong in what? Your ignorance? It pretty much speaks for itself. Did you even live back then? Tyson faced all who dared to face him until he was jailed. And it was starting to get to be a very big problem to find any. All of them were top rank guys at HW. Even after getting out - he did pretty much the same thing.

Tyson was an incredible physical phenom, very high speed, incredible power, high technical skill. He was shorter than most of his opponents, so what is it that was handpicked? Who didn't he face? And why would he alter his way of fighting when it was highly effective, and pretty much needed due to lack of height? Yes, Bonecrusher Smith shut him down, but still lost handily.

If you don't understand that being in jail for nearly 4 years affects a guy, then I don't know what will convince you.

 

not only that, but making over 100 million by the time he was 25 years old took the hunger out of him.....of course that could have made him quit training.....and listening to his giant stupid posse telling him he didnt have to train to KO "this guy"

If you read the books on Tyson, and I do, and if you believe them, and I do, he was already slacking on his training before he knocked out Spinks for the belt. Sad and scary to say, he was probably best on his way up very early in his career.

Cus D'Amato's death seemed to take away his desire to be the best he could be.

Quite honestly Tyson is the type of fighter with his speed and power that just decimates B and below level fighters. Tyson just has that type of style that if you're not highly skilled and tough, you're just going to sucumb.....

Tyson lacked nuances to his game that would allow him to adjust to situations and perservere.......thus when they increased his caliber of opposition he just could'nt make the adjustments the other could.

Tyson only beat one great fighter in his whole pro career....and that was Michael Spinks who most people thought lost his rematch to an old Larry Holmes.
Michael Spinks simply was'nt a heavyweight.

You cant name a fighter that Tyson beat that was better skilled than any of Mike Tyson's first three pro defeats.....I'm talking about Douglas, Holyfield, and Lewis.

Can somebody name me one fighter that Tyson beat that was anywhere as skilled as those 3?
I dont think its any coincidence that Tyson's first 3 losses came to the best skilled fighters he had ever faced.
People like to say that Tyson had lost the passion, but the fight before Holyfield, he had obliterated Frank Bruno in exactly the same fashion that a prime Tyson had done......so I think that the notion that Tyson was'nt the same fighter post prison goes out the window with that Bruno rematch showing.


No question in my mind, the caliber of opposition ruined Mike Tyson.

Ruined is what happened to John Tate against Weaver. Tyson was never ruined to anywhere near that degree. He was ko'd like lots of guys that lose fights and the corner has a rebuilding job on their hands. If he comes back at 80-90% of what he used to be, then that's what you work with. If he's truly an all time great fighter, he can come back just like a Joe Louis did. He overcome a bad ko and long sustained beating and that was pre-title.
Level of competition was going to be a whole different ballgame though and the days of getting the old name fighters was over. He had to fight contemporaries and up and comers and not the long in the tooth guys.

Another measurement is how good did Tyson do when the roles where reversed? He looks great when he's youthful with reflexes fighting the old Berbicks of the world. How'd Mike do when he was the guy with the failing reflexes?

I'm not taking the quality of the opposition into account, just the quality of the Tyson that climbed into the ring. Tyson wouldn't be the only great fighter who was better very early than he was in the middle or late stages of his career, another perfect example is Kostya Tszyu.

I'm not the bible of Tyson, I'm not in his head and I don't know what he was thinking, I just know what I saw and I know what I read, and that's what it looked like to me. Once Cus was gone, Mike was looking to get by on what he already had instead of trying to become better.

 

Tyson was OBVIOUSLY on a steep decline by the time he fought Lewis, I don't think you can seriously contest that. When he fought Douglas, he was so ill prepared that his corner - his completely inexperienced corner - was using condoms filled with ice water on his eyes instead of an endswell. Are you seriously trying to tell me that this happens to a heavyweight champion of the world who takes his job seriously, trains hard and surrounds himself with the best people? Really?

Holyfield is a great fighter himself and I don't want to take anything away from him, but I don't believe that he could stand and fight with a young Tyson the way he did with the Tyson that was in front of him. If you do, that's your opinion and you're allowed to have one, I just happen to disagree.
