Of course being a good fighter and a good trainer is two different things. To be a good trainer you got to have good training skills, experience, knowledge of training methods, understand biological things, a bit of knowledge of nutrition, health, dangerous situations that can cause injuries etc. As well as good physical health to be able to train fighters 4 hours a day, 5-7 days a week, good communication abilities to understand exactly what’s going on in the fighter’s mind if he just can’t put it in words. Also some other important things. So most importantly, you have to be a skilled trainer, but being a former fighter as well is a good thing because former fighters have a lot of training experiences because of their (long) career, they know boxing from the inside, if they were helping other boxers during their active career they have experience from the outside. They can learn the methods in the gym, they can learn the way of fighter-trainer communication, they know what is an athlete capable of and what are the limits... So being a skilled trainer and a former pro boxer in the meantime can be a great one-two combination!

Just a few names who were pro boxers then turned out to be good or great trainers:

    Roger, Jeff and Floyd Mayweather
    Jeff Fenech
    Buddy McGirt
    John David Jackson
    Freddie Roach

So, in your opinion, based upon a fighters career, ring intelligence, knowledge of what's going on, communication abilities etc. which currently active or recently retired pro boxer(s) could turn out to be a great trainer(s)?

You should know that talented athletes aren't the best trainers/coaches in the world. Case in point, Isaiah Thomas, suckiest coach in NY history. People who don't have natural talent and abilities but somehow succeed are the better trainers, since they rely more on technique than physical gifts.

So you take out of the equation people like RJJ and FMJ (I doubt both have the patience to train others anyway). Given that who are the better trainers in my opinion? It would have to be Bernard Hopkins. Not really physically gifted in any way, but ring savvy makes him a really good candidate for it.

Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins are already their own trainers for a long time and they correct their trainers at times. Hopkins called JDJ the Professor after having beaten him. I think Mike McCallum should have been a great trainer, not just a cornerman like for Tyson ( against Lewis) and I don't know what's wrong with Pernell - he has everything to be a great chief second.
Concerning these fighters that have been fighting recently - Richie Woodhall in England, true Gentleman, very insightful, Marco Antonio Barrera in Mexico, smooth, ultra-calm talker, Winky Wright would be an excellent trainer too.

    Roger Mayweather (not Foyd)
    Buddy McGirt
    Freddie Roach
This also takes dedication, in Floyds case he was with Floyd Jr. early on
Buddy did wonders with Tarver and Gatti but he spread himself too thin
Roach made the best of his limited skills as a fighter but makes a big difference as a trainer
There are many more but these 3 come to mind and are completely devoted to it

    hatton great boxing brain
i dont agree to roy jones as he boxes in his own way and not out of the text book meaning many fighters wouldnt be able to adapt to jones's style.
leonard should open a pro gym i think

Roy would be a great choice.

Have you ever heard him commentate on a fight? He say's what fighters should and should not be doing and gives great insight. He would not try to make fighters fight like Roy Jones.

roy would be fantastic - he would not expect people to do what he could do, but i remember the amount of times the experienced hbo commentators were made to look foolish when roy read the fight and told people several seconds beforehand what would happen. was laughed at then was proven right. also, floyd would be great, as brash as he is outside the ring - he's a dedicated professional inside, and unlike his uncle/dad, he's a fairly decent bloke - he wants the most money so he hypes up his fights - problem for me with roger - he knows floyd is that good, so all he ever does is tell floyd that - and tell him how crap the opponent is. if the fighter in his care wasnt as great as he is being told he is - i dont think roger would turn out to be that great a trainer. floyd i feel would be like roy, and have a fantastic boxing brain and would analyse the fight really well and help his fighters to win tactically.

Current Fighters who would be good trainers.

Floyd Jr - (He seems like a genuine person, maybe overprotective though, he called a fight quickly on Iron Ring)

    Shane Mosley
    Bernard Hopkins
    Roy Jones Jr.
    Allen Green
    Corey Spinks

thats all I can think of right now.
