Which fighter do you find most intimidating?

Hearns looked menacing. Scared the **** outta Duran, that's for sure.

 

Liston and Foreman looked scary, very well perfected stares.

However, I was basically exposed to Tyson in his time, real time.

A stare might not mean much and be reasoned away intellectually, but boxing feeds off emotions, be they positive or negative - and layered atop frightening performances already achieved by your opponent in the ring - it could still have a nice multiplying “faaark!” factor.

Tyson looked like he literally wanted to kill guys - and he said as much anyway.

Combined with excited adrenaline, I often watched big fights vicariously, as if I was in the opposing corner - literally relating to how the actual opponent might be feeling

I often sympathised with Tyson’s opponents - rightly or wrongly, I felt that one of the more significant effects of “intimidation” would be the loss of properly relaxed legs - (I could feel hints of it in my own legs) impairing one’s all important mobility even before first bell.

Suffice to say, physically, the intimidation factor put Spinks into a completely altered state vs Tyson. A dead man walking.

One fighter who didn’t appear to try and intimidate but still intimidated very much so, simply via his evidential performances and resting, naturally impassive facial expression was Joe Louis.

The Bomber was certainly someone you wouldn’t like to see in the other corner - and certainly not when, after being married only hours prior, he was chomping at the bit to start his honeymoon- as Max Baer noted after their fight.

Joe might’ve viewed Max as the proverbial c*ck blocker - thus giving rise to one of Joe’s most efficient. energised and brutal destructions. Lol.

 

I always thought that when he was in the zone Lennox Lewis was awfully intimidating pre fight.

 

Lennox Lewis looked very much in the zone, as you aptly put it, in the Rahman rematch face off. Appearances don't always count, but in this case, they matched up nicely with the incredible performance Lewis put on shortly thereafter.

 

Either one of these two guys would make most guys take a dump in their jocks

Two fighters staring intensly, clearly trying to intimidate the other, infers they both take the threat of the other serioulsly. One fighter being completely stoic & relaxed, suggests they know something their opponent doesn't.

 

I don't think anyone ever looked more dangerous during introductions than Iran Barkley.

 

Lennox was generally in good shape, but you just knew that for some fights he was really up for it and had probably went the extra hard yards and it showed in his demeanour.

 

Who was the one who defined fear as staring across the ring at Joe Louis before a fight starts, while knowing he wants to make it a short fight?
