Nice find. Definitely after and stolen off Joe. Post fight Frazier's comment garnered quite a bit of attention as time went on. Leonard would never give that sort of assessment real time for obvious reasons lol

Lol, it was a bad enough mistake for Leonard to reciprocate Duran's sentiment "I will kill/keel you". Man, Duran did get into Ray's head for that first fight, didn't he?

Yeah, if only people listened to Joe more often. No dummy and he made (or should've made) great copy. But there was some other, self-absorbed fella hogging the limelight during Joe's time, always barking that he was the "best" or something like that, - can't quite recall his name though, lol.

I loved Joe's relating of how Ali, while punching during the FOTC, said, more or less: "Don't you know I'm God?' with Joe basically replying "Well, God, you're getting your a** whupped!" Ali denied that he would ever be guilty of such blasphemy. Due respect to Ali, but I totally believe Joe's version of what was said.

 

Lol, someone has deliberately stopped taking their meds a week out before the big fight. Fury truly confirmed to me that he is a genuine nut when he either feigned to or actually did lick the blood on Wilder's shoulder. Haha.

He's a great character who has substantially lifted interest in the sport. Jack Dempsey would've said: "I don't care if he can't fight a lick (happenstance pun), if he's good for the sport, I'm all for him" - which is actually what the Mauler said about a young Muhammad Ali in the 60s.

Thomas Hearns staredown was pretty intimidating, I'd run 100 miles in other direction if he was looking at me like that.

 

I think Frazier was the first.

 

Hearns had a big reputation for a great staredown in his earlier days. His stare down with Benitez is a classic from memory.

Actually Benitez was good value, he had this huge machismo stare down but wasn't a big puncher or scary fighter. He loved to get deep into that staring tho.

 

I remember the Hearns/Benitez staredown that's honestly one of the best staredowns ever, you could literally cut the tension with a knife so intense.

Your right about Benitez I remember his staredown of Leonard was a classic.

 

Yeah Wilfred always gave great value in the stare down as he jockeyed for position even when looking a handful of inches upward. From memory they didn't really let Duran and Benitez have a proper one.
