Which fighter do you rate that nobody else does?

That Froch fight was the start of the hatred for Dirrell for sure. Froch is very popular on this board. If people truly believe that Dirrell faked a knockout against Abraham and then faked injury to avoid fighting Ward, then fair enough, call him an embarrassment, but as for the way he fights, absolutely nothing embarrassing about that. He has his method, whether you find it pleasing on the eyes or not does not change the fact that it's a valid method that works for him.

I didn't enjoy Haye's performance against Valuev, but he obviously clearly won that fight easily while being negative.

Staying outside of punching range is negative? Yes I agree, to an extent but you also have to consider whether he is so far out of range that he cannot punch back. Dirrell may have been outside of punching range, but obviously not far enough that he couldn't land on Froch. He was able to make him miss, and make him pay. It was no counter punching master class but it was effective. Of course, if he had been more positive he would have landed even more. If he was good at inside fighting like Ward then he would have landed more, but he can only do what is natural to him. To me, if it stops him getting hit, it's defence.

 

It's maintaining range, so yeah it's a form of defense that keeps you out of your opponent's reach, granted one that none of the fighters mentioned(Dirrell, Alexander) have necessarily mastered. It's a criticism I have of Frankie Gavin, the fact that he's very rarely out of his opponent's punching range.

There's guys like Pete Whitaker, Mayweather(thrown in merely to get Flea's ire) that are excellent at it because they're able to make them miss and are sufficiently positioned to come back with their own, where it's a matter of inches, and there's dudes like Dirrell where it's a matter of feet. It's a method of defense that he's not - or wasn't on the night - particularly good at, because he often failed to keep himself in position to return fire, even if he was evading most attacks.

Mora didn't force Mares to throw all those low blows. Mora's being made a scapegoat to ridiculous degrees in this instance. Yes, he was pathetic in officiating the fight, and he should probably never officiate a fight again, but Mares chose to throw the low blows. Nobody forced Abner to do it, he's just a dirty fighter, end of. He did it against Darchinyan too.

In response to the thread, I rate Karoly Balzsay fairly highly. He's not a world class fighter, but he's got skill and has record some decent wins over his career. Also Elio Rojas, who people won't exactly be rushing to criticise, but doesn't really get mentioned much at all. He's a very capable fighter IMO.

 

I think Joe Murray is an excellent prospect who has a lot of physical advantages at the weight, which he utilises. He gets my pick. I think he'll accomplish more than his brother.

Anyway, Paul Williams is another fighter that I don't really rate that highly, but I'm a fan of still. Doesn't have a clue on how to use his height and reach, and apparently spends way too much time doing fitness training rather than working on boxing skills, but he's entertaining, will fight anyone, throws a zillion punches a round, and is aesthetically pleasing when he throws those uppercuts and combinations with those long ass arms.
