Corrie Sanders: I loved watching him fight, with his sick handspeed and power, he could have really been much better than he was. However, he simply did not take the sport seriously enough to condition himself or get a serious trainer, and he ******ed his career in doing so, I think. The blitz he did of Wlad gave us a glimpse of what he was capable of, and I truly think he could have achieved much more if he took boxing more seriously.

David Tua: Much like Sanders, his refusal to get in shape was both baffling and infuriating. The first Rahman fight was the last time he was in good shape. He was clearly at his best fighting in the 220s, but he frequently showed up in the 240s, making him painfully slow and plodding at times. If he'd bothered to pick up some actual skills (head movement, cutting off the ring, etc.) he'd have had a much more successful career. Also, his adamant refusal to throw in combinations pissed me off a lot. The longer his career went on, the more he seemed to rely on landing a single huge, leaping left hook. He didn't have many dimensions to his game to start with, but his refusal to add any or stay committed to conditioning only compounded these issues and hurt his career.

Oscar De La Hoya: Even though he's my favorite fighter of the modern era, DLH frustrated me a lot too. I remain convinced that he failed to reach his full potential as a pro, though he did have his flashes of brilliance and versatility. To me, the biggest problem was he kept switching trainers and couldn't seem to decide on a single style and stick with it. Granted, while he basically fought like a mini-Trinidad at 135 and that wouldn't have worked once he started fighting bigger guys, I think he would have been better served with some continuity. One thing he used to do a lot that frustrated me was he'd do things in one fight, only to not do them in the next even if what he did showed some promise. In the Whitaker fight for instance, he switched Southpaw a few times and he seemed able to get Whitaker more easily than he could while he fought Orthodox, and he also caught Whitaker solidly with uppercuts several times in that fight, but he never seemed to try fighting Southpaw much ever again, even though I think it would have helped his game a lot to incorporate some stance-switching (or even fight Southpaw instead of Orthodox, since his right hand was never that strong anyway, and I felt DLH would have been best served trying to fight like a Southpaw mini-Lennox Lewis, i.e. paw with the jab, throw lots of overhand crosses at range/uppercuts in close, etc). He also got a little more flat-footed under Floyd Sr., and I missed the more extreme, bouncy lateral movement he demonstrated in the Trinidad fight and his earlier days. In short, Oscar showed a lot of different dimensions over his career, but never seemed to put it all together or optimize the things he could do into a single, cohesive style. And the number of different styles and trainers he employed, the lack of stylistic familiarity and continuity that resulted from it, made Oscar seem like a fighter constantly in flux, building multiple foundations while never becoming a really finished product in my mind, and that hurt his career too, in my view at least.

Paul Williams and Nathan Cleverly for not taking advantage of their height and employing a jab into their arsenal.

Carl Froch for being so slack in the early stages of a fight.

Roy Jones for refusing to retire.

    Valero for doing himself in.

:good Again, brilliant post; always enjoy reading them.

I've thought the same about Oscar's footwork, once he lost that sort of latin bounce in his step he wasn't the same danger offensively as he was before IMO, he was at his best when he was up on his toes, fighting with rythm. He showed touches of it in the Hopkins fight, though that was probably more out of neccesity than choice. I agree, DLH could of been much more.

RJJ hands down. He'd play around with defeated men too often. W. Klitschko is the new RJJ.

    James Toney all the way,
he was one of the most naturally gifted and skilled fighters of all time. But he too often chose to act like an unmotivated thug, and to not pick his boxing career over his competitive eating career

No one tops Judah but presently, no one annoys me more than Dawson. So much damn talent but fights only once a year and gets too unfocused in the ring. Guy has crazy speed and his lack of using it cost him a very winnable fight against Pascal as well as his desire to win not being there 100%. When he wore the Hearns-style haircut I was pissed! Shouldn't even be holding his jockstrap.

The guy manage to pack an ATG career with his horrible work ethic. He was going to be a top tier ATG if he was really dedicated
