I remember he was down to fight Scott Harrison.I really wanted that fight to happen so I could see Guzman. The gulf in class would have showed itself quite early IMO.

Yeah, he was due to fight Harrison and Arthur and I think he'd have handled them both quite comfortably.

Still, that's the problem with Guzman - you have to use guesswork and conjecture because, instead of running through these guys, he's been avoiding hard work and wasting his career.

When he does get in the ring, even now, he still reminds you what could have been. That's what frustrates me the most.

Sorry mate, should have been clearer. The "Gifted One" was Kirkland Laing.
I used to train at the same gym before Billy Nelson opened his own place.I spoke to Ricky a few times and was always taken by the way he was always polite and humble, same with Billy. He was the main pro in the gym at the time, but at a bit of a crossroads. No one thought he would do as well as he has. There were other pros and ams who never amounted to **** all that swaggered around, expecting you to jump off bags etc.I always kept an eye on Ricky after then because his attitude really stood out and left an impression.Seems like everyone thinks the same nowadays.

I'm sure tonight will be anything but a walkover.Got a phone call last night asking if I want to go if someone pulls out(probably third or fourth choice!:|)
It may not be tonight but I think Ricky's got a KO in him soon.Think he's gonna benefit from the weight sooner rather than later. His jab is also very underrated. When I watched him train it was obvious that it really is one of those spearing ****ers, you know that cutting-type jab.
I still hear from someone who's in close contact with Billy and goes to his gym sometimes. That's how I knew for a fact that they were chasing Marquez.I'm a big fan but I did NOT want that fight for him!:nono

He'd of had more trouble with Arthur than Harrison IMO.

Lads if you haven't seen Alex Arthur vs Michael Gomez then you missed out on a treat:good

Guzman shows flashes of skill now, but he's a faded version of the unlimited potential he used to show.

I was a big fan of Arthur, but his problem was that while he had excellent ability,he truly believed in his mind that he was an ATG in the making.I'm all for guys reaching the level of say,Floyd, deciding exactly what they need to do in training, essentially becoming their own trainer, but Alex got a superstar complex way too soon.He wouldn't follow various trainers' instructions and was convinced he knew it all. He's actually a good entry for this thread now I think of it.

Sorry buddy, my mistake :good I don't know much about him if I'm honest; I've heard him mentioned as a what could of been sort of fighter; but I don't have anything to really generate an opinion off of.

I've met Burns twice myself pal, lovely bloke. He has that sort of 'everyman' air about him if that makes sense, approachable and respectful.

3rd or 4th choice or not, a title fight is a title fight! Is-it at the Braehead Arena? The fella he's fighting (Moses, though spelling may be in-correct) is a dark horse to me, but a friend of mine at the gym has seen him and says he's a very respectable fighter; so what will be will be. Lightweight is a much better fit for Burns and he's a better fighter as a result. I agree that Marquez would not be the way to go:lol: That's one way to lose your momentum in a hurry! Dynamita is one of the elite, so props for chasing him, but consider your career kid.

I'd like to see him fight Rios next, or failing that; Mitchell but I honestly have a hunch that it's going to be Gavin Rees. :-(

Didn't he claim to have a medical condition that stopped him being able to lose weight? :huh I think the guy who wasn't a huge Lightweight ended up at Welter in the end.

Rios would be a superb way to find out how far Ricky's come.:deal

Didn't know about that though it wouldn't surprise me if he was. Amazing talent but a true enigma.

chris john - the guy has obvious skill but he continues to toil in obscurity choosing to fight comfortably at home often against competition far below his instead of stepping up fighting with the best....:?
