My dad always told me stories about Ali (especially the Thrilla in Manila). Sugar Ray Leonard was the 1st professional fighter I ever watched (I remember I was thoroughly impressed when he did that windmill thing when I watched him as a kid). Mike Tyson and Oscar dela Hoya sustained my casual interest in boxing. I followed Pac's career a bit when he won the belt against Sasakul, then I became a real Pac fan after the Ledwaba fight. I only started being a real serious fan of boxing as a whole after the Oscar fight. I started researching Pac's possible next opponents and that's when the whole boxing scene sort of opened up to me.
Roy Jones Junior. I watched a highlight of him on youtube and I was hooked. The grace, the cockiness, the speed, the power, he had everything. Sheer dominance.
I thought people would get that this was a joke. Seriously, I started watching in the early 80s, first big fight I saw was Leonard-Hearns. Also watched Holmes-Cooney. I'd say This content is protected would be my choice. In the meantime watch Rocky beat **** out of Ivan Drago as a reminder that this movie is far from real life boxing. My most vivid memory of boxing from when I was a kid has to be Nigel Benn vs Gerald Mclellan. I also have good memories of the Benn Eubank fights. I went off boxing for many years due to a lot of it going to Sky etc. Joe Calzaghe vs Jeff Lacy really reawakened my interest in the sport and I don't think many decent fights have slipped by me since. The internet (broadband) makes it easy to stay on top.
My dad used to be a fan of Muhammad Ali and its the first time I learned what sport boxing is. But I began to appreciate how it is being played or performed on Leonard. Maybe SRL made me a boxing fan.
RJJ - His performance vs. Tony Thornton made me a fan of boxing. Before that fight i was interested in sports in general and so i watched some boxing fights too, but never was really taken by the sport. The unbelievable barrage of punches that Jones dealt out to Thornton made me a Jones-fan and a boxing fanatic too.
Smokin Joe Frazier when he beat Ali, always loved the underdog, when i was a kid all everyone talked about was Clay/Ali. But what really got me hooked was when i overhead my mum & all my uncles going nut's in the kitchin one time over the Buchannan/Duran fight in 72, (there all Scottish) there was about 15 adults in the house & all were really pissed off & screaming/ranting/yelling & talking about the ref & the disgraceful low blows, My mum was describing (Duran) as that greezy wee *******/swine. I picked up on the thread & thought to myself that (I liked the sound of this ****er Duran) but i sensibly kept my gob shut & anyone here whose had a scottish/irish upbringing will 100% understand what i'am on about
