A lot of people still rate James DeGale and ignore his myriad faults. Saul Alvarez still gets way too much credit for a really shitty set of fights where he didn't look anything special.

He wears a bandana though and is young and cool.

Promoters gonna hype that boy up.

DeGale won the European title after only a few pro fights - and he should not be rated ?

    A) he shouldn't have been fighting for it
    B) he nearly lost to a C-level guy who'd been stopped by Curtis Stevens

    What the ****'s to rate?

He also lost to a 11-fight novice who the majority picked to hammer him. Yeah, I think it's pretty clear he doesn't deserve to be rated very highly.

I watched a few Alvarez fights and him against Cotto he looked gone early, showed great heart. Fought Rhodes and done really well but i didn't stay up to watch him vs Gomez/Cintron he just isn't a star IMO. It seems like people are trying to hard to create stars out of ordinary fighters.

Other week i watch a bit of both those fights and he looked poor in both for me. He was gasping for air against Cintron and getting hit with a fair few.

What amazes me is he actually works on defence yet it looks non-existent at times. IMO if that kid fights Mayweather he's getting a beating..

Alvarez does look like he's cutting too much weight to make 154. There must be a reason why he seems so listless. And he's huge! I bet he'd be physically more imposing than Chavez Jr at 160.

He's got skills and he puts his punches together well, but I've not seen him in a fight that's made me go: wow, I need to watch more of him.

There's only so long you can put him in against old, faded contenders before he has to fight someone good.

Good point, for me he's developed physically a lot earlier then lads his age. He looks like a fully developed man when really he should still be filling out.

As you say there's no way factor just a pretty good lad who really needs a step up in class.

Alvarez is a strange one. I see something there, but it's a long way off finished. He's young, but he's got a lot of fights behind him. I don't understand the way they are guiding his career. They have used the softly softly approach, put him in with a bunch of old timers and club fighters and now they are talking about putting him in with Floyd?

If I were in charge of him I'd be looking for at least one rung on the ladder between old Kermit and Floyd. I don't think Alvarez is a fast learner, he's only had two fights less than Mayweather, and he is nowhere near the complete article. His engine is questionable, his defence relies on the other guy not throwing anything of note, and like it's been said above, his weight and size don't seem to match. Do they fill him with helium or something ?

I don't think its a case of him needing to move up, its a case of him doing the weight the wrong way. His height and reach will always put him at a disadvantage at Middleweight and he will need to adapt his style to compete against bigger men.

He was at 147 less than 18 months ago.
