His reflexes were better than you make them sound. He wasn't overly reliant on them but that doesn't mean he couldn't be slippery. I don't remember him looking "poor" unless you're talking about when he was shot. Kalambay made him look bad but Mccallum still had his moments and I think that was more of Kalambay just fighting the perfect fight, not Mccallum being bad. The rematch was very close though so give Mccallum that credit. I wouldn't consider him very slow but he was precise in how he moved and feinted quite well at times. His footwork didn't look that bad to me he just didn't have much footspeed but like Louis he did what worked for him.

Old School fighters were better at defense in general they did not rely on blocking nearly as much as modern fighters.

    Canzoneri
    Duran
    Burley

Modern Fighters with great head movement were of course Mayweather and Whitaker.

He had very good head movement but also blocked a lot and held his hands high. He's my fav boxer from the 70's/early 80's believe it or not then it's George Foreman(really 70's Foreman because George didn't fight as a pro in the early 80's). Night and day huh?

Sure is. Don't fancy George too much myself. Too unskilled.

I undestand I felt the same way. It was his heart that won me as a fan but lately Old George is getting overrated TBH. He got outboxed by Schulz and Morrison for crying out loud. I don't think he got better overall in his second career at all though he did block and pace himself better. He always had a good jab and great power.

Did I say anything to the contrary? I'm pretty sure I acknowledged that against the right opponents he could look very well off defensively.

Hell, watch him against a severely weight-drained Kalule and see how often he's being tagged clean in the early rounds. Or, of course, Curry.

I do. Great fight, although both had slipped a bit by then, Kalambay coming just off his devastating loss to Nunn.

Never said he was, just a bit on the slow side in comparison to most of the fighters being mentioned in this thread.

I acknowledged that when I proclaimed him "very well-schooled".

I acknowledged all of this as well. Very well schooled, just on the slow side.

Maybe you oughta just re-read my post rather than assume I was attempting to denigrate him based on my opening line. Bottom line, his defense wasn't exceptional, but it was very solid for an offensive boxer-puncher.

I'm fine but also remember that Curry wasn't a bad techinician himself so using him isn't a good example at all. Really I don't consider Mike a defensive fighter but he could mix both well and his defense was pretty solid. I didn't think you were trying to degrade Mccallum at all. Virtual hug?lol

Why? I specifically mentioned that against certain fighters (i.e. accurate ones) he could be made to look poor defensively. You have to also consider that he wasn't landing a whole lot himself against Curry except for glancing jabs, mainly to the body. So it's not as if he was only being caught out of disdain for Curry's offensive tools. He was just being out-boxed and tagged up.

And what of the Kalule fight?

That I agree on perfectly well, and have never said anything to suggest otherwise. In fact I said just that.

You can't spring something like this on me after I've just went into all that detail trying to prove my point, goddamnit!

Curry was eating rounds but people forget that a round or two before the knockout that Mccallum was backing him up and taking the fight over. I haven't seen the Kalule fight in awhile but from what I remember he didn't look that bad and didn't have an easy fight. I remember seeing the Curry fight not too long ago. I just rewatched a bit of the Kalule fight and Kalule looked good defensively and didn't look drained to me. He also gave Leonard a good fight so he was a good fighter.

You said he was a solid offensive fighter, you didn't say exactly what I said.

Well Valentine's Day is around the corner:smooch:hey
