Which fighters had underrated hand speed?

I dont think DLH gets the credit he deserves for his hand speed, infact Mayweather sr seemed to bring that back out of him, I remember watching the Campas fight and thinking, damn!, Oscar's handspeed is a lot better than i ever thought.

Also, I dont think Terry Norris handspeed gets appreciated enough, people tend to talk about his combination punching, aggressiveness, Boxing skill, but his hand speed was pretty impressive to.

James Toney was also pretty quick early in his career imo.

To a lesser extent maybe Miguel Cotto deserves a shout, I thought he showed in the Mosley fight just how underrated his handspeed was.

I don't think anyone would deny Norris has amazing speed. Oscar is fast and its usually mentioned as 1 of his attributes, I don't think you've picked the best example of his speed though G, still not nearly 1 of the quickest ever. Barrera is fast but doesn't have the best footspeed, so in some fights he gets outsped, ie Pacquaio/Jones

Cotto and Arguello are slow, they have decent timing though

I dont agree with that, I think the real problem is, Barrera's reflexes are not as quick as his hands, take Kalambay, I always thought his reflexes were cat like, quicker than his hands infact, although he was hardly slow but you get what im saying. I didn't think Mike McCallum's reflexes were particularly quick either

Cotto isn't slow imo. See him against Mosley? Cotto just looks to power punch a lot, which usually makes him appear not a fast as he can be.

I do agree with you about AA though, I thought he was a lot like McCallum, not particularly quick, but had good timing, great in McCallum's case.

    Your picks?

    James Toney.

Check the speed of the combinations he threw in the Barkley fight - astounding.

His hands were still rapid when he was stones overweight up at heavy.

well even in the first few rounds of Pac he looked almost as fast..i think thats more a matter of having good timing though. timing can give you the same effect as speed. I always felt that winky wrights hands where not that fast..but his great timing gave him the abilities of a fast fighter...i tend to think cotto had/has good speed with very good timing....however..his suprises one even more because when he is fighting guys who are not fast...strong guys...and he is just tring to land to hurt..he doesnt look that fast..plus he works mitt and the heavybag rather slow.

Hearns was very quick and never seems to get mentioned. Duran was fast. Judah is 1 of the fastest ever for all his other weaknesses

Today JMM is pretty fast and the only fighter to land at will on Pac although thats partly his timing too.

I don't think Cotto is quick because a fast puncher can throw fast powerpunches, Cotto can not. That's why I predicted Pacquaio would dominate Cotto, just too slow. He may have looked fast in your opinion against Mosley because, I didn't think he looked quick but its all relative I suppose

    Your right on MABs relexes

I think Cotto worked extra slow for the camras for 24/7 with pac..maybe hoping to lull pac into a false sense of security.

I thought Hearns and Judah were shoe ins for fighters considered to be fast.

I put that down to the fact he is generally flat footed, rooted to the floor, too square, he tends to throw hooks inside more than anything, which obviously dictates you to rotate the body more, which obviously slows you down to a degree, however his jab against Mosley was very sharp and accurate, he would hit Mosley and be gone before Mosley could react, when he gets on his toes, uses his legs, the speed is there imo.

Rocky Marciano - just in terms of people often think he was something of a laboured roundhouse puncher - but the guiy was 185 lbs he'd make a lot of big heavyweights seem like the mummy in comparison - his squat short armss made it a little desceptive

I think Joe Louis is quicker of hand than many realise, and tho everyone knows SRR was fast i am not sure if they know just how fast he really was. Blinding hand speed, and i suspect JG will verify this with a first hand account.

Bernard Taylor, Howard Davis, Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones Junior. How many more very very fast fighters are we going to mention here.
