Yes, I think he did have a few nice roles. Interesting tidbit from Wikipedia: "Aragon enjoyed popularity among Hollywood circles. He was romantically linked to This content is protected
I read that Micheal couldn’t get all of his money because there was some dispute with the Butch Lewis estate, though hopefully it was resolved.
His guarantee was $500,000 (US), according to Tim. Bruno's guarantee was in excess of a million ($1.1 million, as I recall). Bruno was the draw at Wembley.
He earned millions in the settlement with King and blew it immediately, regardless. That was my point. King didn't like Tim Witherspoon. He cheated him. The court made King pay up. Every situation with every fighter was different. What they did with their money was on them. Some put their money to work. Some blew it. Some snorted it. Some had 97 kids and the mothers took all the money. Some bought lions. What they did with it isn't on King. He promoted 100s of fighters. He wasn't the executor of anyone's finances, like Butch Lewis was.
I remember Tim had a huge entourage with him in London. They were spotted shopping together everywhere as tourists. A silly amount of them all wearing matching clothes...spending money like no tomorrow. I wouldn’t be surprised Tim told everyone Don King was paying..only for King to rightly deduct what the entourage cost from Tim’s purse. I am not saying Don King entirely deserves any defence here...but Witherspoon racked up a lot of expenses in London if he was paying for all the living costs for those guys in tracksuits he had with him. Everything they spent, ate and cost to fly from America. it all adds up.
I don't see how the artificial and unnecessary use of long words can be viewed as 'natural'. Let me make something really clear. My view of Archie Moore on this one minor and unimportant point has NOTHING to do with the colour of his skin. I can think of white celebrities who do the exact same thing but I mentioned Moore because it was his intelligence that was being discussed in this thread. The stuff you mention about this observation being made in particular in the case of black people sounds very much like an accusation of racism. And if you're not accusing me of being racist then you're acknowledging that your comment and also the one about the existence of distorted world views is of no relevance at all to what I have said so why did you bring it up?
I have met Don King a couple times. And I was never robbed. (LOL) Don King promoted boxers for the better part of 40 years. Hundreds of boxers. Most received the biggest paydays of their careers with King. Don King actually settles up with fighters before everyone leaves the arena that night. He has no say in how they spend it. If any of them are BROKE, Don King didn't make them broke. You have to have the brain the size of a pea to think he did. There have been slimier guys named in this thread than King actually was/is. Butch Lewis took ALL of Michael Spinks' money, put it in his own (Butch's bank account) ... gave him a couple grand a month, over 20 years, and left Spinks NOTHING. Michael Spinks thought Butch Lewis was his best friend. Michael Spinks trusted Lewis with his life savings. That's a LONG con. But Don King is the devil. Right (sarcasm).
OK. I would argue that the ability to use initiative and deal with a situation in the moment is a far stronger indication of intelligence. And that planning ahead in order to appear intelligent would suggest the opposite.
Oliver McCall famously stuffed a $1.4 million check from the Bruno fight King had given him in his sock and was robbed when he got home. And the robbers were confused by all the zeros. https://www.upi.com/Archives/1995/09/22/Pro-boxer-McCall-mugged-in-St-Louis/5007811742400/
I think they are both necessary to a well-rounded, thinking person, and Archie Moore exhibited both in abundance during his boxing career. I think a fighter as good as Archie need no one as insignificant as me to defend his intelligence. To my mind, any boxer as accomplished as Archie Moore has to have a high degree of intelligence.
I read years ago that his money was in an annuity that would pay him $20,000 annually for the rest of his life.
There are many forms of intelligence. Tyson Fury is a very intelligent boxer but I'd fancy my chances against him in an IQ test. Muhammad Ali was an extremely clever fighter but failed the qualifying test for the Armed Forces. Moore's skill as a boxer is not an argument that can be used to support the strength of his vocabulary. There is no correlation between sporting intelligence and academic ability.
