Yeah, you'd think that a 230+ lbs guy throwing sharp, accurate combinations at an extremly high pace while maintaining very good form and balance would mean something. Especially against a guy that got the better of for example Dokes and Tyson at that range. You'd think, but...:-(

Hes huge? Holyfield is what 6'3? Bowe is two inches taller. The myth that Bowe should have been able to box everyone comfortably from the outside is kind of funny. He used his size to beat Holyfield, where he did have a big advantage and that required fighting at close quarters. I didnt see too many other guys boxing a prime Holyfield comfortably from the outside or using their size to beat him in close quarters. Holyfield was just dam good and it took a a really good big guy like Bowe to beat him.

Holyfield actually initiated loads of the exchanges, as he often did. Bowe was comfortable at long range and his jab was the key, followed by the right cross. Before the fight some were questioning Bowe's heart, Evander too figured he didn't have that extra something that makes a champion. So he tested Bowe, who came through with flying colours that night, whether boxing behind the jab or brawling toe-to-toe.

Of course, it will never compare with this magical Title-Winning moment..

...and not forgetting how he clearly outworked Holyfield (which hardly any fighter did) and looked fresher throughout the fight. Still, the classic forum's a joke, that's why I seldom post here any more.

Yeah, he showed some great infighting but against a bigger opponent who was a skilled infighter himself that was a dumb move. He should have used his mobility more, stick and move.

    This. :thumbsup

I disagree. The best choice would have been for Boew to learn how to use your size effectivly, keep the opponent out of reach and win easier. But that´s just me.

How can somebody be good at what he is doing if he sucks at half of it? Sorry, I don´t get it. For me he wasn´t really better than Douglas, Page or Witherspoon. The only reason I rank him higher are his wins over Holy.

Bowe wasn´t the superior infighter. The size made the difference. Bowe could have had it much easier if he would have done what Lewis did against Tua or what Wlad does. But I guess easy is not the way you want to win.

There is a difference between fighting a dumb fight despite beeing able to fight differently and not beeing able to fight out of your style. :thumbsup

First, you are bringing up the old "old-timer favouritims argument", now you are trying to provoke me. Showing some great debating skills here. Awesome.

Of course classic is sh*t. People have opinions that differ from yours. What are they thinking.

Perhaps you should stick to the highlighted part more then. :tong

Bowe did the more damage on the inside, showed tremendous infighting ability, and won the fight clearly.

You say "the size made the difference" - yet you criticized Bowe in previous post for NOT using his size.

No, Bowe couldn't do a Lewis-Tua with Holyfield.
Holyfield isn't a short guy with stubby arms. He's only 2 or 3 inches shorter than Bowe, and has a decent reach. Lewis was like 7 inches or more taller than Tua, who was short-armed and slower on his feet than Holyfield. How can you expect a similar game plan to work ? Besides, Holyfield is better than Tua in many ways.

The main difference I'm seeing on this thread is whether people want to push some over-critical agenda or not.

Bowe fought a terrific fight against Holyfield.
Holyfield could have fought smarter, (as shown in the rematch).
Both fought within their normal styles and according to their nature.
It was a great fight, and a truly great performance from Bowe - who was far better than an ordinary contender.

Not even read through the thread...

bodhi has picked Schmeling, Sharkey, Ottke, and Michaelchewski

beinstock has picked Dempsey, Gibbons, Carpienter, Miske, Levinsky, Fulton and Graziano

janitor has picked Burns, Corbett and Professor John Donaldson

Boilermaker has picked someone from the twilight zone

he grant, Stonehands and Duranimal have all mentioned Duran

rockysplitnose has labelled Bowe a reverse-racist

thistle1 has said something smug and condescending about people without wrinkles who wipe their own ass

Yes, perhaps I should have written "not used his size effectivly". Of course he used his size, you can´t not use your size when fighting someone smaller inside.
And yes, he won the fight clearly, I never said any difference. I was more impressed with Holyfield´s infighing though.

It was a comparison, not meant to be taken literally, you know? And I gave you another example. ;)

So, tell me, what´s my agenda? I´d like to know.

It was a very good fight and a very good performance by Bowe, Holyfield fought the wrong fight, so I wouldn´t call his performance very good. And no, Bowe wasn´t really better than an ordinary contender.

Actually, I mentioned Duran first. And Hopkins. And Jem Mace :thumbsup

Holyfield didnt fight the wrong fight. He had sparred Bowe several times and had succcess exposing some of Bowe's flaws. Its just those flaws didnt come up in the fight. People think Holyfield made these massive adjustements in the second fight, but in reality it was somewhat similar to the first fight and very close, and possibly Bowes poor conditioning attributed as much to the loss as all these supposed adjustments Holyfield made. Bowe was still going to make him fight with him, its just Holyfield was able to box a little more from the outside. A little more discipline from Holy against a slower fatter Bowe perhaps?

    What, Wlad ?
I've been defending Wlad a lot lately on this board, and singing his praises, but it's a stretch to suggest he'd be able to comfortably implement his style against someone as good as Holyfield.
Sure, he fight more cautious than Bowe and it is both sensible and effective, but he's taken years to develop that ability.
Also, again, he'd find it very difficult to do it against Holyfield.
Bowe wasn't as good at controlling the distance as Wlad was, but he's better on the inside.
Wlad's probably smarter, but that doesn't mean Bowe fought a "dumb" fight.

As for your Lewis-Tua comparison, what exactly was the point of it then if it wasn't to be taken literally or seriously ?

Your agenda, IMO, is to "prove" that Bowe was somehow just another ordinary heavyweight contender who had some freak one-fight performance to end up as undisputed champion.

(Rather than a real quality fighter who, for whatever reason, didn't last long at the top of his game)

    I disagree.
He was truly good enough to beat a good champion in a terrific fight, and when he lost a year later it was by a very close decision. He may not have fought the best contenders out there, but he dominated some of those that were ranked at the time. He fought perhaps the best fighter of the time (Holyfield) and went 2-1 against him over 3 year period.

I think Herbie Hide for about 2 rounds showed the template for a small fighter beating Bowe - his limitations let him down though.
Marciano or Dempsey would hit the ,there to be hit, Bowe a lot of times a lot harder than Hide ever could.

Bowe is given so much exaggerated credit for his win against Holyfield its not funny.
Bowe didnt really win Holyfield lost using the wrong tactics, the follow up prved this..
