There's a good one! He was cruising pretty well and the one bloke i thought might beat him was a stablemate and good friend - wouldn't have happened.

Joe Frazier.....Damn you George Foreman and Ali
Billy Graham....I bet he hated the ground Gavilan walked on
Tommy Hearns....Leonard was his nemesis and stopped a possible long reign at 147

Agreed. Yeah, Breland and others were knocking on the door for a world title shot around that time.

It needed a defeat from Honeyghan to convince Curry to move up.

Without Carlos Ortiz, Ismael Laguna would have kept that title he won in 65 till he fought Buchanan.

    I second the Frazier-Foreman point.
If Foreman hadn't been around Surely Frazier would be rated higher up
on list of the heavyweights. pugilistspecialist: without Ali, there wouldn't be
the Trilogy between the two, 2 of my favorite fights were FOTC and The Thrilla!

The newfound respect resulted from his fights with Ali more so than the ones with Foreman.

You know a few months ago I did a thread asking everyone which loss is the most embarrasing:

    1. Patterson losing to Liston
    2. Frazier losing to Foreman
    3. Tyson losing to Douglas
    4. Lewis losing to McCall/Rahman (either one)

Tyson Douglas seemed to have the most votes followed by Lewis McCall. IMHO the Heavyweight Champ is supposed to be the baddest man on the planet the guy who lick any sonofabitch in the house. Getting blasted out early sheds light on a fighter's durablity.

I suppose I find it more humiliating to be battered around the ring constantly being dropped.

I think Tommy Hearns deserves a mention.
    Sonny Liston.

I agree....IMO Thrilla in Manila is still the greatest heavyweight championship fight ever and the FOTC was no slouch. We found out Frazier's worth in that series, but it took alot out of him. Without Either Foreman or Ali around he would have been dominant and probably have held the title until Larry Holmes came along.

I see what your saying. i just don't think Frazier would have been as great
without Ali. He was the ying to Frazier's yang.

He was both lucky and unlucky.

He was lucky to share an era with Ali who he had the style to beat, and created his legend.

He was unlucky to share an era with Foreman, his kryptonite.

To be clear, Frazier would have run riot in any era. It just might be that he would have beaten up the wrong men.

And some of us feel that laguna REALLY!!!! won the first encounter with Buchanan, although Ken answered all the questions in the 2nd bout! Good call with laguna though. Had he not run into Ortiz he might (Blasphame) be considered to be on par with another Panamanian??? IMHO

How about Oba Carr...he had the misfortune of sharing time with Trinidad, Quartey and DLH. I am not certain the he would be a dominant fixture in another era but these were 3 darn good welters to try to rise above.
