Which fighters were great at fighting off the ropes?

Toney, Benitez. Holmes in the 90's was very good at fighting off of the ropes and out of a corner. 90% of his fight with Mercer he was in the corner or on the ropes.

 

Niccoline Locche or Jake LaMotta two opposite ends of the spectrum how not to get and how to catch everything and still come back fighting.

 

Although fighting along the ropes seemed to work against him in his first fight with Fenech. :smoke

 

It worked in the rematch though.

 

this was the first name that came to mind. they called him radar for a reason.

 

Moorer. Did it beautifully against Cooper.

 

Toney, SRL instantly come to mind for me.

Sweet Pea was good off the ropes but didnt stay on them long like Toney and SRL.

 

Was watching Louis Walcott 1. And Walcott did a great job in fighting off the ropes. The first knockdown from the right hand. Walcott was fighting off the ropes during that period of the fight. He also did it in round 12.

 

I think for the most part a trend is emerging here as it appears that primarily the great counter-punchers fall into this catagory.
Prime Galindez and Quarry immediately came to my mind among others...

 

Jake Lamotta kod a couple of guys after feigning distress on the ropes ,Joe Walcott used to back into them then using them as a springboard fire off a big shot,he tried this against Marciano but Rocky nailed him first.Benitez and Toney allways looked comfortable laying on the ropes,older fighters sometimes adapt this tactic into their repertoire to save their aging legs.

Nelson's work on the ropes with Fenech in the first fight got him his draw.

It annoys me people question that decision like it was a robbery.

The fight was close, because Nelson was so cute on the ropes. A punch has to land to score, and Nelson was brilliant at parrying and deflecting a lot of the Thunders punches.

Yes the causal fan only saw Fenech charging foward, but surely anyone who has posted more than 1,000 times about boxing on this forum is more than a casual fan (LOL, casual fanatic, surely the ultimate oxymoron?)? So I would hope that although maybe not as pleasing to the eye as Fenech's Duran imitation, people can respect what Nelson did and can to some degree understand how the fight could be scored a draw.

Riddick Bowe did some of his best work with his back on the ropes

 

Nelson's a great pick for sure, but i have to disagree and state the Fenech fight was an utter robbery. Nelson fought gamely off the ropes that night but was overwhelmed. Azumah was ready to go at the end and one more round would have done the trick.
