Which fighters were great at fighting off the ropes?

I can understand someone saying they thought Fenech won (I too had it 7/5 Fenech if memory serves me right.), but it was closer than most think and I could understand the draw. IMO Fenech may of felt hard done by; but Nelson was champion and the decision was not a robbery.

 

although an offensive fighter nigel benn was very dangerous when backed up against the ropes.

 

WE'll have to disagree, i thought it was a absolute robbery as did 90% or more of the boxing fraternity. One prominent authority called for judging of the judges to be brought in post fight due to this decision. The champ can't keep his title just because he doesn't get knocked down or out. From memory i had Fenech by 4.

 

If anything you should expect more from the champion than challenger.

IT's the "he has to TAKE the title" mentality that encourages half assed hometown champions and gift decisions.

Holmes wasn't fighting off the ropes. He was fighting out of the corner. I think he realized quick that he wasn't going to be able to be more mobile than Mercer like he would have been when young, but that take away the movement and he was still a better mid to close range fighter than Mercer. So he wanted to stay in that corner. And Mercer kept going for it.

It was working on Holyfield too. But, Holyfield's corner was smarter than that ****, told him to stop falling for it, and they kept yelling at him every time he was following Holmes back to the corner.

Saad Muhammad, Paret, Galindez, Randy Turpin, Ron Lyle, and Jerry Quarry were all excellent on-the-ropes fighters.

 

I don't really recall Ali fighting on the ropes. Just doing the rope-a-dope.
