Which fights do you suspect were fixed in order not to ruin another, major fight?

I feel like there's an unspoken agreement between sanctioning bodies and judges that says 'if the fight is close, side with the person who sells.'

To me there were a few examples of bouts where one guy could not win in order to not ruin another fight. Two examples are Hagler-Hamsho 2, and Hearns-Hutchings which when you think about it, were two cases of H vs. H each leading to a larger H vs. H ..lol

Hutchings and Hamsho were not gonna win in a million years, truth be told but....if you were a promoter, would you not at least have a "talk" with the challengers beforehand to make sure no upsets were in the making? I mean Hutchings vs Hagler, Hearns vs Hamsho and definitely Hutchings vs Hamsho wouldn't have had the same meaning to the public as Hagler vs Hearns did.

Also De La Hoya vs Tyson and Chavez vs Walker...and there is a number others that you'd think.

But they could also be a case of "those boxers aren't talented enough"....I don't know , but if I were a promoter with a major fight like that looming, it stands to think i wouldn't like any upsets....

Don’t know if you want to say Fix but I could see Fury being stopped on a cut against Wallin if he was just another fighter.

I’m not sure I get the Hagler and Hearns example.

Hagler and Hearns massacred Hamsho and Hutchings respectively. There’s no way either fighter could have lost to those guys. Hagler had already dominated Hamsho once before and Hutchings was pretty much a sacrificial lamb to a Hearns who was firing on all cylinders after the Duran KO win.

I don’t think anyone needed to talk to either Hamsho or Hutchings. Hagler and Hearns were just ready to take care of business.

Exactly. I agree. But when you think about it, wouldnt you want to make sure everything ran smoothly?

Anyways, based on his performance against Duran and Hutchings, I felt Hearns was gonna take Hagler's head off lol..goes to show you what an impressionable 12-year-old girl I was in 1984 haha!

    A couple of examples:

    1) Federico Thompson v Gaspar Ortega - This was an unbelievably stupid gamble for Thompson to be taking on Ortega when he had a world title shot at Benny Paret coming up in 6 weeks. I scored the fight 5-4-1 for Ortega, as did the AP. So, to be fair, it was a very close fight. However, the fight took place in MSG and the upcoming title fight was also in MSG. All a part of an MSG promotion. Clearly, I wouldn't call this a robbery but I would call this favorable judging to keep the title fight/promotion on track.

    2) Mustafa Hamsho v Curtis Parker I - 2 judges scored this 5-4-1 for Hamsho and the third judge had it 7-3 for Parker. I've seen this fight twice and there is no way Hamsho won. I had it 6-2-2 for Parker and have never seen or spoken to anyone who had it for Hamsho. I once read that Parker said the Hamsho already had been signed to fight Hagler at the time. I can't see that because he still had to fight Alan Minter before signing for the title fight later in the year. But clearly there was a promotional trajectory in place for Hamsho. So I would once again call this favorable judging (Richard F Murry, who scored for Parker clearly didn't get the memo) because I felt this actually was a robbery.

    3) Rubin Carter v Holly Mims - this one's a little different. The story on this fight was that Holly Mims came in as a late substitute to fight carter and Carter raised holy hell when he heard he was fighting a cutie like Mims. Again, the story goes, that Teddy Brenner, MSG matchmaker, had to settle Carter down by saying to him, "Rubin...you...can't...lose!" Now Mims dropped Carter in the 4th, but took his foot off the gas in the 5th and 6th which was a bit funny. Mims supposedly said after the fight about his 4th round knockdown, "I at least like to let them know I was there." In this case there was nothing wrong with the judging (I personally scored it 8-2 for Carter) but did Mims have the cuffs on? Like Hamsho, there was a promotional trajectory in place. Carter was really being promoted by MSG as a box office star. Especially after his near-decapitation of Florentino Fernandez. So it's up to the individual to draw their own conclusions.

That reminds me: Canelo Alvarez versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Such a passionate promotion that they portrayed it as the next great Mexican war, and I bought it. There is no way, in hindsight that Chavez would have beaten Alvarez, but I expected such a good fight, and Chavez fought very passionlessly.

What made it smell even more fishy was that GGG walked into the ring and said their fight had already been signed, right after Alvarez had been declared the winner. Hmnnn!
