Going on 3 weeks since a big fight on HBO or Showtime and I'm damn near going through withdrawal here. I can't wait until September 6th. But until then, to feed my addiction, I've been watching...

Rafael Marquez vs. Mark Too Sharp Johnson II

Pretty lackluster fight, but those body shots Marquez landed to produce the first knockdown, and ultimately end the fight, made me cringe.

    Joe Calzaghe vs. Mikkel Kessler

This was a great fight, that seemingly doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. People make it seem like Joe completely outclassed Kessler, when that's not the case. I scored the fight 116-113. A clear win for Joe, but not as dominant as some make it seem. I really lied the way Kessler came out and fought like an animal for round 12. He knew he was down and only could win by knockout. He reminded me of Erik Morales in the final round of the Ayala fight. Kessler landed a big right hand in the final 20 seconds of the 12th round that I think stunned Calzaghe. Joe already had it in the bag by then, though. He had Kessler confused for a good portion of the fight.

    Librado Andrade vs. Yusaf Mack

Another great fight that seemingly didn't get the appreciation it deserved. This was a war from round one, with Mack ultimately losing the war of attrition. But man, it was fun while it lasted. I remember watching it live and jumping out of my seat when Mack dropped Andrade with a single left hook in round one.

Wayne Braithwaite vs. Yoan Pablo Hernandez

I was sure Braithwaite was damaged goods after the Maccarinelli fight, and I think Yoan's handlers did too. And that looked to be the case in round one, where Wayne got dropped and battered for most of the round. All of sudden out of nowhere, in round three Braithwaite catches Hernandez on the temple and puts him down hard with a shot that completely wrecked his equilibrium. Hernandez was so badly hurt by the shot that the obviously corrupt hometown ref had to help him to his feet. Any other ref would have stopped the fight right then and there, but it didn't matter. Hernandez was a sitting duck, and after two more knockdowns the hometown ref had no choice but to stop it. Great win for Braithwaite.

A few days ago, I caught JJW vs Marciano 1 on ESPNCL. Man, JJW had the perfect gameplan against Marciano for 13 rounds and then boom. Lights out. Marciano with the perfect shot. If you noticed in the post-fight interview, Marciano had swelling around both eyes. Walcott wasn't pitty-patting. I don't think any heavyweight in history knew their way around the ring better than JJW. He never allowed himself to get caught against the ropes even though he was constantly moving back and fighting against probably the best heavyweight pressure fighter in history. JJW was really skilled.

For some reason when there is a drought like us boxing fans are having now I tend to review fights that are perceived to be controvertial just to get a new take on it or try to see things within the fight that I have'nt before.
