Which former champion was viewed as the most unbeatable as an active champion?

Some might say Louis. A good pick, but he was floored a few times an in some close fights.

Some might say Marciano as he never lost, but he was close to it, and floored twice.

Holmes is a good pick, and so is Ali, but they had their share of trouble and in Ali's case he had a few losses.

The answer to the question? I say Jeffries. During his six year tenure he won all matches via KO, save Sharkey, and was never floored. During his day, he was most likely viewed as the most unbeatable.

    Thoughts?

Prior to Douglas Tyson was considered unbeatable. People thought he could have reigned for years. He probably could have if hed held it together but I guess thats as much of a handicap as having bad defense, slow hands, or weak footwork.

Ray Robinson, when in his prime as a welterweight was thought of as unbeatable.
Benny Leonard during his 7 year championship reign as lightweight champion was so respected that it was said he had to "hold back" in many title matches, so he could get a money rematch.
Willie Pep, before his near tragic plane crash, was thought of so superior to any of the featherweights of his time...

Tyson, Liston and Foreman, probably. The big K.O guys have a way of capturing the imagination.

Foreman and Tyson were looked upon as indestructable. Particularly in the States.

Most 'experts' could not see anyone beating Mosley at 147 once he beat De La Hoya...

What did Jeffries have? 15 fights.

He was great but, you cannot disqualify Maricano and Louis on your scale because they were floored or had an off-night. It has to be best night vs best night.

I am not sure if I understand the question although I am happy to try my hand at answering it. Does "viewed" mean even those wrong the oppinion was there or does it mean do we think that there was certain champions in history that at thier best were unbeatable?

If it is the first one...Mike Tyson has to be number one. He looked like the most unbeatable man in the world in his prime.

    If it is number two.
