if you ask them its rickson but he is more legend i think.... but we will never know. in pure bjj i would say royler being a winner of adcc 3 times i think it was is a front runner. in mma renzo because he faced way better comp. right now its roger
I would think it´s Rickson. The thing with the Gracies is that many of them were competing when the sport was young, so they were basically steamrolling over very overmatched fighters, some of which didn´t even have any grappling or submission skills. Even prime Rickson and Royce would not be able to dominate today´s MMA organizations like back in the day. On the other hand I think if they´d be competing today, they´d probably train very differently and add more wrestling and muay thai to their game and be overall better fighters.
royce definatly not the guy is one of the most overhyped buys ever. riskson the legend has it that he would still have the advantage over every fighter in the clinch and on the ground. so again is the legend true i donno. renzo and royler had the best resumes so they are my picks. renzo better mma royler the better grappling.
a better question is are the gracies still relevant in mma? aside from roger no and he i dont think will amount to anything once he actually gets hit hes going to fail.
If I had to pick one Gracie to walk down the street with - it would be Relson Gracie. He has an understanding of jiujitsu that is nonpareil. Go to any major grappling tournament in the States and you'll see Relson sitting at the egde of the mat for all of the finals. He studies everyone's technique and keeps his own technique evolving to keep up with the ever changing sport.
Someone has got to give Royce his props...and he would have beat Hughes, eventually Matt would have broke a knuckle on Royce's head...a submission would have followed.
Royce does get **** on somewhat in that people think he was only beating guys with no ground skill, which just isn't the case, he beat some good judo guys and Ken Shamrock, probably the best grappler in the Japanese style of shooto/catch wrestling at that time, and Severn who was one of the best HW wrestlers in the US and had obviously trained grappling for MMA at least somewhat.
ive heard this a lot of times from interviews from fighters like palo filho as well as my instructor who goes to brazil every year to train with his instructor royler. and royler who comes down to my school once a year. royce said it last week end when he was down. its basically something that i have only heard the gracies say. the legend has it that rickson is a master of the clinch and from that position will get anyone to the mat or he will control you there. again this is all here say ive never seen it proven and im not sold on it. however if its true then who knows.
still royce couldnt do it in timed rounds. as well in modernday mma is completely irrelivant and even in his prime wouldnt have done ****. as well royce dosnt even have good bjj in sport bjj he never won major tourneys in sport bjj. he gets **** on because if you have ever met the guy hes a dick that commands respect and acts like hes as good as fedor. ive met him and it was a hugh let down.
ive seen footage of rickson tapping royler inside a minute. i found that pretty impressive and he appears to be the physically strongest of them all so that puts him at the top of my list. without timed rounds i think the gracies could still be somewhat effective.. nowhere near the dominant fighters though..
