Which great fighters fought there way up from ABSOLUTE poverty?

I don't have a clue regarding an answer, but I liked the question.

 

I think people from his time were, for the most part, more careful with money. This may have had something to do with learned economic hardship, or whatever. Today we just spend... spend... and spend some more. Amazing how times have changed in this area.

I think a more careful approach to what a person earns is appropriate today... but what do I know?

 

The only reason Marciano was not on the street like Dempsey was because Marciano and family look after each other, whole family in 1 house, Dad and Marciano supporting the family in the shoe factory of couse. But he was still close or near dirt poor before he turn to boxing. He had no money to his name to travel to New York for the intro there.

 

He was out of the army by that time, WWII was over.

 

The Soldiers didnt get paid that well. They got like 5$ a month or so, I belive. Very low pay. I pretty sure he used the money to support family, food on the table, bills paid ete.

 

After the his frist pro fight, and his trial in the ATMS of couse. Or during his trial in the atms, I make a guess around 48 or so.

Not much, i know he was poor and from Tijuana though. I heard a story (only from a friend though) that he had his first pro fight at age 15 , won by stoppage and then went to school the next day!! Just a story i heard , maybe not true , but i believe the guy who told me it

 

........Indeed. It wouldn't surprise me if he was ever presented with the opportunity to meet blood family members, he would decline. I think I would.
