There are worse fighters than Marvin Johnson in there. Pops is in my personal hall of fame

Fame shouldn't be a popularity contest?

Of course taken literally, the word "Fame" is based on "popularity". But, the Hall of Fame shouldn't be.

    Casuals may think so.

The Hall may think they can make more $$ by attracting casuals to the Hall but when the criteria for admission is not weighted towards actual ring accomplishments, it cheapens the whole thing.

Jeff Clark is probably the biggest omission.

Of course fame/popularity should be a factor.
The Hall of Fame is about preserving boxing's history.
If a boxer was massively popular and well-known during his own time (and even beyond his own time) he should get in. You can't re-write history.

You think having entertaining fights isn't an accomplishment?

It seems, that in these kinds of discussions Gatti and McGuigan are nearly always being selected as examples of boxers, who don't deserve to be in. Why is that? Why is someone like Pascual Perez never mentioned? You know, the man with possibly the "thinnest" record of all 20th century HOFers! Imo he's certainly not more deserving than Gatti and McGuigan... and lots of other boxers, who will never even be up for consideration.

Of course, having exciting fights is some sort of "accomplishment"

But, it should not be the weighted over quality of wins.

An unexciting win over a quality opponent > entertaining win over a less quality opponent

So, for example Donald Curry W 15 Marlon Starling should mean more than Ray Mancini TKO 14 Duk Koo Kim

An an exciting win over a quality opponent > an exciting win over a lesser quality opponent

So, Donald Curry KO 2 Milton McCrory and Michael Nunn KO 1 Sumbu Kalambay > Ray Mancini KO 14 Duk Koo Kim.

Of course, you can be devoid of exiting fights and quality wins, and still get elected to the HOF - see Brian Mitchell.

So, politics are involved, as well.

I realize the whole thing is highly subjective.

One thing to remember as that in other sports you have stats.

Stats. weigh heavily in Hall of Fame voting in baseball, football, basketball.

In boxing, the main stat is W/L record and titles won.

But, hardcore fans know that at times those stats alone can tell very little of a given fighter's true accomplishments.

Look who Gilberto Roman beat much less fought. A GREAT fighter. And Cuevas belongs there. While Palomino was fighting meatballs mostly, PIPINO went down The Rings top 10 and OBLITERATED them. Hearns must have hit PIPINO with 200 right hands flush before he turned the trick. Whoo else stands so long against that? 1976-late 1980. Greatness
