He beat Barkley for the WBC title five years later.

A "finished" fighter doesn't do that.

BTW: you argue like a juvenile.

The Duran KO is one of the hardest to fathom clips I've ever seen to this day .. astonishing ..

Cuevas for me - because of the result - I will grant that the Duran stoppage was more photogenic but Duran went on to fight at a very high level for many years...
Pipino was never the same - a ruined fighter who would lose 8 of his next (and last) 16 fights 1/2 by KO.
A couple of fights after the Hearns blowout he fought - you guessed it - Roberto Duran who told him after their fight (an easy Duran win) "Hang them up son, you ain't got it no more... "

Can't choose one over the other. In Cuevas he ruined an absolute welterweight terror who was breaking eye sockets and knocking guys clean out left, right and centre. Hearns was not the favourite but that first right hand had Pipino swaying like a tree in a typhoon.

In Duran, he demolished one of the greatest fighters of all time, albeit past his best and not in his natural weight division. That last right hand landing sounded like a cruise missile smashing against the side of a building. THUD!

    The Duran ko.

Cuevas was the more formidable foe on paper but he fought scared. The fight was basically just target practice for Tommy. Not sure Cuevas landed a single remotely meaningful blow in the entire first round.

Duran showed a lot more skill and shiftiness, and at least gave himself opportunities to hurt Hearns. He was just hopelessly outmanned against Hearns.

Duran. The right hand looked like a lightning bolt going through his face. Then Duran fell on his face as if he actually HAD taken a lightning bolt through the face.

    Duran because of ring conditions.

The ring covering — it wasn’t canvas, more like slick plastic — at the Cuevas fight was like fighting on ice. You can see it in the Cobb-Shavers fight on the undercard and during Hearns-Cuevas.

Manny Steward talked about it openly. The humidity was horrible and it created a layer of slippery water. They wiped it down several times but it just sloshed it around. Thomas just happened to have rubber-soled shoes that would allow traction. Pipino wore traditional leather soles which did not.

The fact that they just happened to bring that extra pair of oh-so-right shoes for Hearns is telling. I don’t know that it changed the outcome but you can see Pipino cannot ever get his footing and fighting against a monster like Hearns who is able to plant and get traction it just wasn’t a fair fight.

Nah. Duran had more or less redeemed himself with his last 3 performances (a beat down of Cuevas among them). He’d proven he still had it. Or that he’d gotten it back if he ever lost it.

I’ll go with Duran if for no other reason than he came to fight. For whatever reason, it was clear from the jump that Cuevas wanted no part of Hearns.

I already answered, but I will add that both were great, but the Duran knockout seems to be remembered more. Because of how great Duran was. When a great knocks out a great it means so much more. Ali over Foreman is one. Leonard over Hearns. Hagler over Hearns.

Since they were both welterweights and Cuevas was world champion...obviously Cuevas.
